It’s official: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s long-rumoured third expansion is real, and it’s coming in 2027. This new DLC for the game, titled “Songs of the Past,” is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red subsidiary Fool’s Theory and will feature Geralt of Rivia in a brand-new adventure. CD Projekt Red recently confirmed the news earlier this week; the company had initially planned to announce the expansion at one of its recent REDStream events, but due to leaks, it decided to unveil it early.

Songs of the Past is going to come out on PS5, Xbox Series X/S. and PC. It is ditching- last-gen consoles, such as the Nintendo Switch, similar to CD Projekt Red’s Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. Not much information is known about its plot, but future details regarding the expansion will be revealed at Gamescom later this year.

The Witcher 3 Getting a New Expansion is a Big Deal

Whether or not you’re interested in The Witcher 3, it’s easy to see how much of a big deal it is that a beloved game like this is getting a major new expansion more than a decade after its release. The Witcher 3’s base game originally launched early on in the PS4 and Xbox One’s life cycle. Those consoles are practically outdated at this point, and a game from that era still getting new content is certainly a sight to behold.

CD Projekt Red is known for making very impressive expansions for its titles. The Blood & Wine DLC for The Witcher 3 was among the most acclaimed expansions of its era, while Heart and Stone was similarly praised.

With how positively-received this news about The Witcher 3 has been, one can only wonder whether CD Projekt Red plans to release a new DLC for its other recent game, Cyberpunk 2077, as well.

CD Projekt Red Has Denied Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Plans, But There is Still Hope

As many may know by now, CD Projekt Red launched Cyberpunk 2077 in a disastrous state. Following the release of the game’s first and only expansion, however, sentiment surrounding the game did a complete 180. Both the title and its Phantom Liberty DLC are now beloved, and fans are currently wondering whether the Polish developer has any others surprises in store for the game.

A few days prior to the announcement of The Witcher 3 DLC, CD Projekt Red responded to a fan on Twitter who asked if the studio had plans to release a secret new DLC for Cyberpunk 2077. The company quickly shut down this speculation with a sharp “no.” It stated that it has “no plans for additional DLCs or expansions” and that, if anything changes, it will inform fans in the future.

On the surface, this may seem to crush any and all hopes for a future Cyberpunk 2077 expansion on par with Phantom Liberty, but it’s worth noting that CD Projekt Red has made similar comments for The Witcher 3 in the past.

Prior to the launch of the Blood and Wine expansion, CD Projekt Red stated in an interview with Eurogamer in 2016 that it had no plans to release anything else for The Witcher 3. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said that Blood and Wine would be the last expansion, and that CD Projekt Red would focus on Cyberpunk 2077 going forward.

While the company did indeed shift its attention towards developing Cyberpunk 2077, as we now know, its plans surrounding The Witcher 3 have changed considerably. Granted, these comments from Tomaszkiewicz were made roughly a decade ago, but this shows that anything can change given some time.

CD Projekt Red Should Bring Back the Canceled Moon Expansion for Cyberpunk 2077

Unleashing Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty DLC: A Game-Changer in the Industry

Some people may be wondering what a new expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 would focus on. A sequel to the game is already in development, dubbed Project Orion, and most of the loose threads in the story of the first game have already been tied. However, there is one way that it could easily bring the protagonists of the game back for a new adventure.

After the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, rumours started to swirl around that CD Projekt Red had cancelled a DLC for the game that was set on the Moon, of all places. As anyone who’s played Phantom Liberty or watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners would know, the Moon serves as a prominent location in the stories of Cyberpunk, as there are several bases there.

A now-deleted 4chan post revealed that this canceled Moon expansion was going to take place during a corporate war and would feature a Moon map that would be six kilometers in size. Several different bases would have been included in the map, and a rover vehicle would have been added to allow people to traverse the Moon’s rocky terrain.

Some very early-in-development screenshots of the Moon expansion were leaked online by insiders, but it’s hard to gather much from these snippets of footage, as it’s clear that the DLC never made it far past the concept stages. Either way, it would be nice to see CD Projekt Red revive this Moon expansion concept for a future DLC. With how far away Project Orion seems to be, a meaty Cyberpunk 2077 expansion could tide fans over for the foreseeable future.
