The Enemies In Deathloop Have No Idea How Long The Time Loop Has Been Running

Deathloop‘s story is pretty much a mystery at this point. We’re waiting for the game to come out before we get all of the meat on that bone. However, Arkane Studios has shared some new details about the game in a recent interview with Game Informer. One of those details is the fact that everyone on the island apart from Colt and Julianna, the two protagonists, thinks that the time loop has just started. Instead of believing that the loop has been going for days, weeks, months, or even years, they’re all waking up like this is the dawn of a new era.

I love this idea that every enemy in the game is living their day like it’s the first in a series of loops. They all clearly believe that they’ll remember what they did the previous day, but for some reason, that isn’t the case. The Visionaries, the eight targets players need to kill, must have given everyone the impression that this is how is was going to be. Unfortunately for them, it hasn’t worked that way. Instead, Colt and Julianna are the ones who remember, and they get to watch everyone go about the same routine like it’s the first day of the rest of their lives.

I always thought that these enemies remembered each loop, or at least had been remembering them up until Colt came along. The fact that they don’t indicates that Colt has been working against the time loop before it even started. Everyone has been ordered to kill him on sight, so there must be some awareness of him. This could all be linked to how he ends up on the island. Again though, we’ll never know until we get the game ourselves.

Arkane Studios has crafted a world that is consistently on the edge of a new age of discovery. Everyone thinks that they’re about to embark on a new adventure in time. They could live forever, die and come back the next day, and do anything they want to. It’s almost sad how they’re actually trapped in an endless day. If Colt left things, they’d all be caught in the loop forever. In a way, it’s kinder to stop the loop and free them.
