Game Science’s single player action RPG Black Myth: Wukong has achieved a remarkable feat of selling 10 million copies just within a few days of launch.
Developed by a Chinese studio, the role-playing adventure turned out to be massively popular in all regions and especially in China, marking a major milestone in Chinese game development.
10 Million Copies Sold As Black Myth Wukong Achieves 3 Million Concurrent Players
Game Science has revealed that the game has sold over 10 million copies across all available platforms as of August 23, 9.30 pm Beijing, China time. The game was already on the top of the Steam’s Wishlist leaderboard before launching, but this feat seemed to shatter all expectation and records, as players across all regions and platforms seemed to be invested in the single player adventure RPG.
The game overtook multiplayer titles Counter Strike 2 and Palworld in terms of concurrent players on Steam, proving that single player RPG adventures are here to stay given the right amount of effort into the story and gameplay mechanics by the developers.
Black Myth: Wukong sold over 4.5 million copies in pre-orders, covering almost half the 10 million mark in sales prior to release.
Game Science revealed the information graphic which detailed the game’s sales and total concurrent players. Black Myth: Wukong opened to both critical and audience acclaim upon release, and the gameplay trailer raked in millions of views especially on Chinese video platform Billibili.
According to a report from data-collection platform Niko Partners, the game overtook Honor of Kings and League of Legends to become the most-watched game in China. League of Legends and Honor of Kings are both massively popular MOBA titles and have dominated the region since a long time. However, Black Myth: Wukong overtook all of these games in terms of watchtime on streaming platforms, demonstrating the region’s appetite for high-quality adventures.
On the other hand, while the game has had a massive success in all regions the game is available on worldwide, the easy availability of the game in China has made an impact on the success. The game doesn’t require a VPN to play to bypass Chinese media laws, and this has played a pivotal role in the game’s success, especially in China.
Black Myth: Wukong launched on August 20, and is available to play on Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 5. The game will launch on Xbox Series X/S at a later date.
