How to Eject a Disc Stuck in Your PS5

PS5 console

Ever since the original PlayStation, Sony’s consoles have thrown several disc-related issues at consumers. The PS5 isn’t exempt from these issues, which often include a stuck disc in the disc tray. As much as you’d like, a press of a button won’t be enough to eject a disc from the next-gen console.

Luckily, you can try a few other options and get the disc out of PS5 instead of resorting to Sony support. This guide will take you through every option you have if you can’t load your favorite game.

How to Eject a Stuck PS5 Disc?

If your PS5 has a disc stuck inside, there are several methods to eject it and not break anything. Follow these methods and steps.

1. Eject the Disc With the Eject Button

The eject button can be found on the front panel of your PS5, right next to the power button. If nothing happens the first time, press it again. If there are some confusing sounds and the disc won’t eject, then you have a case of a stuck button.

2. Eject the PS5 Disc With Controller

If the first option fails, you should try with the controller. What you need to do is press the PS button on your controller to enter the home screen. Now, select the tile that represents the game disc that is currently in. Press the Options button on your controller. A menu will appear where you will find the Eject Disc option. Click the button on your controller and the disc should come out.

Often times there is just a problem in connection with the eject button on the console and disc tray and the controller option resolves all the troubles. However, there will be a situation when the controller option isn’t working as well. This is when you will need to manually eject the stuck disc.

3. Manually Eject the Stuck Disc

For this to work, you need to be careful. Completely shut down your PS5 and unplug all cables. Place te console on a clean, flat surface with the base removed. With the PS logo facedown and the screw hole facing you, gently pull up and away on the cover to remove it. Find the manual eject screw on the optical drive, which might be covered by a small circle of plastic film. Now, you will need a cross-hatch screwdriver to turn the screw clockwise. Continue until the disc is visible enough to remove. Make sure your console remains clean so use a blower or compressed air.

Return the cover and you are ready to insert a new disc.

What to Do if PS5 Won’t Take in or Read Discs

If your PS5 won’t take in or read a disc start by checking if there is already a disc in the tray. Press the eject button or try other ways we detailed above.

  • If there isn’t a disc, when inserting a new one make sure you are putting it in the right way. If the console is standing vertically, the disc label should face the left side of the PS5. Gently push the disc into the slot until the console takes it in automatically.
  • Now, if PS5 won’t read the disc when inserted, do not worry. Eject it and get it in again. If the problem repeats, check the disc for any visible dirt, dust, or scratches. Use a microfiber cloth to clean the disc, wiping from the center outwards in straight lines rather than circular motions to avoid further damage.
  • Make sure the disc is completely dry before attempting to insert it again. If the PS5 still fails to read the disc, restart the console by powering it off completely and then turning it back on.

If your PS5 still fails to take in or read a disc after basic troubleshooting, you might need to take more in-depth steps. These include rebuilding the database through Safe Mode.

  • What you need to do is completely power off your PS5 first. Then, press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps. First beep will be heard instantly, while the next one is seven seconds apart.
  •  After the console shuts down, press and hold the power button again until you hear the two beeps, which signals that the console is now in Safe Mode. Connect your PS5 controller using a USB cable, and press the PS button to access the Safe Mode menu.
  • In this menu, select “Rebuild Database.” This option scans the system’s drive and recreates the database of all content, which can resolve software issues that might be preventing the console from reading discs. Be aware that this process can take some time, depending on how much data is stored on your PS5. Once the database rebuild is complete, the console will restart, and you can test the disc drive again.

Additionally, it’s essential to ensure that your PS5’s system software is up to date, as outdated software can sometimes interfere with the console’s ability to read discs.

  • To update the system software go to the home screen and select ‘Settings’ and then System, where you will choose ‘System Software.
  • From there, click on “System Software Update and Settings” and select “Update System Software.” The PS5 will check for any available updates and prompt you to install them if needed. Keeping your system software updated is a sureproof way to keep the console running normally and this should help prevent and resolve disc-related issues.

This is everything you need to know about PS5 disc issues.
