With the reveal of Battlefield 6‘s multiplayer and the general excitement around the franchise returning to its realistic roots, it’s no wonder that everyone is Battlefield-crazy right now. According to a new video with Michael Pachter, an industry analyst who’s been known for being wrong, was straight up told that the franchise would be come an annual title. Who exactly gave him this incredibly specific information? He alleges that the General Manager of the Battlefield franchise, Byron Beede, said so.
With the existence of Battlefield Studios, there are four different studios on rotation to create the greatest possible Battlefield experience. This isn’t very unlike Call of Duty‘s path towards releasing a title every year. with Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games. The three studios, DICE, Ripple Effect, Motive, and Criterion are each development powerhouses in their own right and are now on their way to developing the path toward the next generation of first-person shooters.
However, just because that’s the plan doesn’t mean that it’s set to be implemented right away. In fact, annual releases of Battlefield games is still between five and six years away, according to Pachter. For all of Michael Pachter’s claims, you can check out the video below.
While there is definitely room for the Battlefield franchsie to grow because of so many talented studios, annual releases could very well lessen the quality of what players will come to expect. As someone who worked in at a video game retailer for the entirety of the 2010s, I remember very vividly what people thought about annual Call of Duty releases. Considering that, I would like to think that Battlefield Studios will learn from their opponent’s mistakes and create a different strategy.
Ideally, I’d like for Battlefield 6 to be the next game that Battlefield Studios simply continues to build on in the years to come. While an annual release might sound fresh and inviting, I believe that creating one single game that can become the focus of all four of those studios might help in reclaiming what Battlefield was always meant to be: the greatest FPS of all time.
