Toys for Bob’s Rule for Keeping Spyro Ageless: “No Dragon Puberty”

For Spyro: A Realm Beyond, developer Toys for Bob is steering clear of total reinvention. Speaking in a recent interview with content creator Canadian Guy Eh on YouTube, the development team detailed how they are balancing franchise evolution with honoring the purple dragon’s long-standing identity.

Rather than overhauling the character or modernizing his backstory, the studio is treating the version of Spyro in 2018’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy as a foundation to build upon. The goal is to take that established version of Spyro and place him into completely new, expansive environments without diluting what made the original PlayStation games iconic.

“We aren’t trying to start over and reinvent what Spyro is or who he is,” the development team explained during the interview. “We actually want to take that Reignited version of Spyro… and see what it’s like to put him on new adventures.”

To maintain this authenticity, Toys for Bob established strict creative boundaries regarding Spyro’s characterization. The studio explicitly rejected maturing the protagonist—such as aged-up voice performances or storylines involving growth milestones—in order to keep the character relatable across generations.

“It has to still be ageless. It has to still be timeless… we didn’t want to build such firm definitions [of age]… so yeah, that was definitely where ‘no dragon puberty’ came from,” the team noted.

Rather than requiring long-time fans or newcomers to do “homework” on the series’ decades-long, fragmented history, the game is designed as an accessible on-boarding point. The developers are prioritizing atmosphere and feeling over rigid continuity, aiming to recapture the whimsical, “zen-like” tone of early 3D platformers while delivering a modern gameplay experience.

“If we’re doing our job right… we make those things sacred, not a specific feature… but it’s the sentiment or a feeling or tonality,” the team said.

Announced at the June 2026 Xbox Games Showcase, Spyro: A Realm Beyond marks the iconic hero’s first brand-new mainline entry in nearly two decades. Developed by Toys for Bob, the highly anticipated platformer is targeted for a Spring 2027 release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
