Capcom Says It Plans to Bring Back More Classic IPs

Capcom celebrated the success of Onimusha: Way of the Sword in a recent corporate disclosure. The title sold more than 1 million units on launch day, adding yet another to the list of Capcom games that have seen massive commercial success in 2026. However, one part of the report will be particularly interesting to long-time fans of the Japanese game maker.

Capcom emphasizes that alongside publishing major annual titles, the company is actively focusing on re-activating intellectual properties that have not seen new launches in recent years. This shifts focus toward unlocking the massive potential buried within Capcom’s historic portfolio rather than depending solely on blockbuster pillars like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword proves the new strategy is off to a great start. Ending a two-decade hiatus since the series’ last main entry in 2006, the samurai action title marks a bold resurrection of a classic franchise. Despite the long hiatus, the series hasn’t missed a step. Onimusha’s sharp, deliberate sword combat has been met with critical acclaim and enthusiastic reception from longtime fans.

Another notable effort in this strategy is Mega Man: Dual Override. Set as the twelfth mainline entry in the long-running series, it represents the first flagship Mega Man release since Mega Man 11 debuted in 2018, bringing a nearly nine-year gap without a main installment to a close.
