With over 1,000 Pokemon discovered, these unique and somewhat cute creatures come in all shapes, sizes, and elemental types. Fish Pokemon is just one group inhabiting the creatures’ world. They can be incredibly fast, generate electricity, or even transform into powerful entities. This guide dives into 10 of the best fish Pokemon, exploring their unique skillsets, preferences, and any drawbacks they might have.
In this guide, we explore the 10 best fish Pokemon, from the mighty Barraskewda to the beautiful Milotic, and the unfortunate yet loveable Magikarp – plus many more hidden gems.
1. Magikarp
We start with the unpopular opinion, Magikarp. This is pretty much the most useless Pokemon and the poster child for underwhelming beginnings. However, we love it for its potential. Yes, Magikarp has only Splash move which is basically nothing, but at level 20, it evolves into a magnificent beast, Gyarados. You might felt scammed when you chose Magikarp at the start of your adventure, and because of this, but also because of its evolution potential, Magikarp can’t be left out from a list of best fish Pokemon.
2. Sharpedo
Sharpedo is the Cruel Shark Pokemon introduced in Gen III. It is a vicious predator known for its incredible speed (75 mph) and sharp teeth. This dark blue fish uses jets of water for propulsion, making it a terror in the water. It evolves from Carvanha (a piranha Pokemon) and surpasses it in both speed and ferocity. Moreover, Sharpedo has a Mega Evolution that grants even more physical power and a stronger attack. All of this and more makes it one of the best fish Pokemon out there.
3. Ludicolo
This happy-go-lucky Pokemon resembling a sea-horse has the Swift Swim ability, doubling its speed under rainy conditions. It can also heal itself slightly during rain with Rain Dish. Despite its joyful demeanour, Ludicolo is a powerful Water/Grass-type attacker with strong moves like Leaf Storm and Razor Leaf. However, beware of Flying, Bug, and Poison-type attacks, as Ludicolo is vulnerable to these types. Nevertheless, this evolution form is pretty strong and one of the best Fish Pokemon.
4. Whiscash
Whiscash, the Whiskers Pokémon, is a grumpy but dependable Pokemon although he doesn’t look like one. This catfish Pokemon hides a tough exterior under its frown. It can generate electric shocks and is known to unleash powerful tremors when defending its territory.
Whiscash has two useful abilities:
- Oblivious prevents it from being taunted or falling for infatuation tactics
- Anticipation can warn it of an opponent’s strong move.
While strong against Electric-type attacks, Whiscash is vulnerable to Grass-type moves due to its dual typing.
5. Barraskewda
Barraskewda, the Swift Swim Pokemon (Gen VIII), is a barracuda-inspired fish known for its aggression. This speedy swimmer uses its spinning tail fin to propel itself at over 100 knots, allowing it to ram into opponents with incredible force.
Barraskewda thrives in rain, where its Swift Swim ability doubles its already impressive speed. This makes it a nightmare for slower opponents. However, as a pure Water-type, it’s weak to Grass-type attacks. Despite this vulnerability, Barraskewda’s speed and powerful physical attacks makes it one of the best Fish Pokemon.
6. Elektross
Eelektross, Pokemon, might not be a Water type, but its eel-like form earns it a spot on the list of best Fish Pokemon. Unlike most Electric-types, Eelektross bhas the Levitate ability, granting it immunity to Ground-type attacks – the one weakness most Electric-types share. This makes Eelektross a unique and powerful electric Pokemon. Eelektross’ stats are well-rounded, with high Attack and Special Attack for powerful electric attacks. However, its defences are a bit lower, making it susceptible to strong physical attacks.
7. Feebas
Feebas may not win any beauty contests. This brown, clumsy fish is known for its muddy-water habitat and weak stats. However, Feebas holds a secret – it evolves into the majestic Milotic. Despite its unappealing appearance, Feebas has two valuable abilities:
- Oblivious prevents it from being taunted or falling for infatuation tactics
- Swift Swim can double its speed under rainy conditions.
While Feebas itself isn’t a strong battler, its potential to evolve into Milotic makes it a worthy catch for trainers seeking a powerful Water-type.
8. Wishiwashi
Wishiwashi, the Schooling Pokemon, is a unique case. On its own, this tiny fish is weak with low stats. However, Wishiwashi possesses the Schooling ability. What this means is that when a group of Wishiwashi gather, they can merge into a powerful singular Wishiwashi known as the School Form. This transformation increases Wishiwashi’s stats, making it a formidable Pokemon. While a lone Wishiwashi is vulnerable, its ability to combine with others makes it a surprisingly strong Water-type contender, which makes it one of the best fish Pokemon.
9. Tatsugiri
Tatsugiri is a tiny but cunning fish with a surprising trick. Despite being a Water-type, it spends a lot of time on land. This little guy comes in three forms resembling different sushi rolls: orange (Curly), pink (Droopy), and yellow (Stretchy). Each form boasts a unique ability.
Tatsugiri’s signature ability, Commander, allows it to control the much larger Dondozo in double battles. When Dondozo uses the move “Order Up,” Tatsugiri’s form boosts a specific stat for the Dondozo:
- Curly Form (Attack)
- Droopy Form (Defense)
- Stretchy Form (Speed)
While Tatsugiri itself is weak, its ability to partner with Dondozo and manipulate its stats makes it a surprisingly strong Pokemon. However, be cautious of Dragon-type weaknesses, as this dual-type Pokemon is vulnerable to Dragon and Fairy-type attacks.
10. Milotic
Milotic is perhaps the ultimate fish Pokemon. This Feebas’ evolution has impressive HP, Special Defense, and Special Attack. This graceful swimmer is a strong fighter. Its Marvel Scale ability can protect it from critical hits, and Competitive boosts its Special Attack if foes’ stats are lowered. While vulnerable to Grass and Electric attacks, Milotic’s stats and abilities make it a top fish Pokemon.
While there are many other fish-resembling Pokemon, these are perhaps your best options to look for as they all can turn battles to your advantage, in addition to having quirky and cute looks, not to understate Milotic majesty.
