Watch Dogs 2 In-Game ‘Leak’ May Confirm Assassin’s Creed: Empire

Assassin's Creed: Empire

This article contains Watch Dogs 2 spoilers.

Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs 2 may have ingeniously confirmed rumours that the next Assassin’s Creed game is to be set in Ancient Egypt.

In the game’s delightfully meta mission Ubistolen, protagonist Marcus Holloway is tasked with infiltrating Ubisoft’s headquarters and stealing an unreleased game trailer.

While the trailer in question, which shows off a sci-fi title, has understandably got users speculating as to whether or not it is actually for a genuine upcoming Ubisoft project, a more subtle in-game occurrence during the same mission may have gone unnoticed.

While intercepting a phone conversation between two Ubisoft employees, players can hear one of them remark: “Can you assure me [the trailer won’t be leaked]? After what happened with Unity, Syndicate, Osiris–”

Rumours that the next Assassin’s Creed, purportedly subtitled Empire, will be set in Ancient Egypt have been prevalent for a number of months, after an anonymous user claiming to be a Ubisoft employee detailed the upcoming title in a 4chan post.

Allegedly, Ubisoft are planning to recycle the setting and elements of their cancelled IP, Osiris, for the next AC title, due for release in 2017.

While the in-game conversation could merely point to initial leaks of Project Osiris back in 2013, the fact that the employee lists the other two games chronologically – and the fact that they’re both Assassin’s Creed titles – seems to lend credence to speculation that Ubisoft may have used Watch Dogs 2 as a way to tease its next flagship title. Of course, it could all be a massive troll.
