As we reported last week, Overwatch’s latest title update brought – amongst many other additions – PS4 Pro support to the popular hero shooter.
While developer Blizzard remained somewhat tight-lipped over the exact nature of the game’s enhancements on Sony’s upgraded console, users reported slight improvements on anti-aliasing and a bumped resolution for the in-game user interface.
This has now been confirmed in a Digital Foundry article by Eurogamer, who managed to prise the following statement out of Blizzard yesterday:
“Primarily, Overwatch players can expect improved performance in 1920 x 1080 resolution on PlayStation 4 Pro. We’ve also made several minor improvements that take advantage of the console’s capabilities, including better texture filtering and UI enhancements.”
However, the UI changes have actually introduced a particularly irritating bug to the game, exclusively to PS4 Pro owners.
As demonstrated in the video below, courtesy of YouTube user SharingAn85, the health and name bar for both allies and enemies seems to disappear at random; making it particularly difficult for players to know how much damage they are inflicting on their opponents, and for healers to know the current health status of their comrades.
By switching the in-game resolution to a maximum of 1080p, the problem is alleviating – suggesting something has gone wrong in the calculation of rendering the user interface in 4K for the PS4 Pro.
Blizzard has yet to comment on the issue despite its bug reports forum being inundated with unhappy PlayStation Pro users.
We will keep you updated as to any future developments.
