PUBG creator PlayerUnknown, also known as Brendan Greene, is no longer interested in battle royale games. He mentioned that he is not interested in working on PUBG 2 because he has already made a battle royale title and has some other ideas that he would like to explore.
He mentioned that he is exploring new online experiences that connect players in ways that PUBG does not. This is very interesting indeed but we have not information regarding what these experiences could be like. The following is what he had to say in this regard:
I have lots of other ideas in my head for games I would like to play and we’re going to see if other people would like to play them too. That’s where we’re at. We haven’t really started anything yet because we’re team building.
PlayerUnknown not only confirmed that he will not be working on PUBG2 but also mentioned that what he will be making next will encourage co-op play compared to battle royale games. This could be a looter shooter that he is talking about. Something like Destiny or The Division. For now, all we can do is wait and see what Greene comes up with. He went on to mention the following:
That’s something we’re going to explore. The last man standing concept is great, but I’ve done that. I don’t really intend to make PUBG 2. I’ve done battle royale, it’s time to try something else. There are ideas about how we connect to people and how we provide the different experiences I have.
Making another battle royale game might not be the best way to go and I guess Greene understands that. In 2019 there are plenty of last man standing titles that people can play and some really good ones are available for free. Pivoting towards another genre might be the best course of action for Greene and the company.
