With the recent announcement of Resident Evil 3 Remake I rediscovered one of my biggest gaming regrets, I never played Resident Evil 3 Nemesis. I played a bit of the first Resident Evil, and Resident Evil 2, but never completed a game until Resident Evil 4, 5, and 7, I think we can forget about 6. But now that this remake has been announced, I feel like I need to go back and experience what the original was like. There’s just one problem.
I’m too scared to play Resident Evil 3 Nemesis.
I could quite easily play the original game, either by downloading it for PS3, or buying it for my original PlayStation, but I definitely wouldn’t cope playing it for a number of reasons.
Control Scheme
Old PlayStation games had the worst controls, and the Resident Evil games were guilty of bringing about the one that still breaks my brain, tank controls. You’re probably familiar with this control scheme, mapping movement to four buttons, but associating the directions with the character, not the screen. This means that, if you’re like me, characters veer off into enemies or fire when you’re trying to get them to move away from those dangers, all because my brain can’t process the fact that the character is facing a certain direction. Due to this alone I think the game would be too tough for me to beat.
Nemesis
While I haven’t played Resident Evil 3 Nemesis at all, I have watched a playthrough, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The game is classic Resident Evil, and would probably be one of my favourites if not for the game’s namesake, Nemesis himself. This enemy chases the player throughout the game, and can kill them in one shot if they’re not careful. There are also a number of points in the game that Nemesis could appear, but then again he might not. That fear of never knowing when Nemesis is going to jump out and murder me is just too much for me to handle.
The whole ordeal is made even worse by the fact that the old Resident Evil games required incredibly strict inventory management. If Nemesis shows up and you’ve got two bullets left, you can kiss all that progress you’ve just made goodbye. You can also say goodbye to all of those weapons you picked up, and everything you’ve done to set up for the next area perfectly.
Saving
This is the final reason that Resident Evil 3 Nemesis is just too much for me. The old Resident Evil games used a specific saving system that required you to pick up and hold onto Ink Ribbons in order to save at Typwriters. The Ink Ribbons were limited, so you couldn’t save as much as you can in games today, which makes this game so much harder. You can forget about the game being harder in general, because they were back then, this saving mechanic would kill me faster than Nemesis will.
Should I go Back?
Now I’m really asking you readers, should I go back and play the original Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, or can I wait until the remake comes out? I’ve still yet to play the Resident Evil 2 Remake, but I do see that there are some significant differences there between it and the original, so I wonder if I’d enjoy noticing the same in Resident Evil 3 Remake? Maybe you think that the game is just really worth playing, but however you feel, please drop me a comment with your suggestion.
