Yakuza: Like a Dragon Is Coming To PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S

This week it was confirmed that the latest game in the Yakuza series, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, is coming to next-gen consoles. However, there’s a bit of discrepancy as to where it’s coming first. Microsoft has been fairly clear cut about it all. If you own the game, you’ll be able to get the next-gen version for free as soon as you pick up your next console, from November 10 of course. It’ll be part of Smart Delivery, which is sounding more and more like the most convenient next-gen upgrade system.

Now the game is also coming to PlayStation 5, but confusingly it appears to be a separate release to the PlayStation 4 version. Whilst you can pick up the PlayStation 4 version right now, you’ll need to wait to upgrade your copy for Sony’s next-gen offering. It looks like March 2, 2021 is when the game comes to PlayStation 5, and that’s when you can upgrade your old PlayStation 4 version as well. Not before though.

This is a very strange situation. Basically, the next-gen version of Yakuza: Like a Dragon will be available on Xbox Series X and S from November 10, but not on PlayStation 5 until next year. It’s hard to understand whether this has anything to do with Sony or Microsoft, or even a Game Pass style deal.

More and more, it looks like developers are moving away from Sony to offer better deals to Microsoft. It may not have anything to do with their reputation, or they way they’ve handled the release of the PlayStation 5, but all in all it makes the new Xbox generation look much more appealing.

Despite the fact that I’ve not played a Yakuza game in my life, I’d be more tempted to pick it up for Xbox One just so that I have yet another next-generation game to play. I think this is how more and more people are beginning to feel, and it should worry Sony that it’s becoming the norm. Whilst PlayStation has always been the more ‘premium’ experience when it comes to gaming, now it just seems like a weird platform that’s outdated because of how bad compatibility is.
