You may have caught the features going around a couple of weeks ago showing that CD Projekt had responded to those asking for police chases in Cyberpunk 2077 by stating that Elden Ring won’t have them. This is the worst response I think anyone has ever given, and not just because I know the modding community will be adding police chases to the game from day one now. This response is childish, and it shows that the executives at CD Projekt are tired of listening to fan demands and just want to be done with Cyberpunk 2077. The thing is, they’ll never be done with it because there’s DLC to release, constant support and fixes needed, and the memory of the collective games industry for how bad the game’s launch is.
There are two reasons that Cyberpunk 2077 needs police chases. First, in the game’s opening there’s a point where you see the police attacking a group of car thieves. It’s meant to show you how brutally the police will chase you down if they’re aware of you putting a toe out of line. It gives the world this totalitarian feeling that makes it feel daunting, exactly as it should be. That never pays off though, since the only flying vehicle you’ll see up close belongs to medics, and you never get to touch it.
The second reason the game needs police chases is because still, one year after launch, the police in the game will spawn behind you when you commit a crime. Regardless of your location, even if you look around you to see no one is there, you’ll spawn police if you commit a crime. It’s ridiculous, buggy, and downright insulting to players. I can’t really understand why this exists in the game, why a more dynamic system of patrolling police that then give chase wouldn’t be better, but then I’m not an idiotic executive who thinks they know better than everyone. I say good luck to the people at CD Projekt who have clearly lost their tolerance for the game. I can’t wait to see how good the police chases are in Elden Ring so Cyberpunk 2077 is made to look even more foolish, I just hope the devs, the people who care about it, make things right regardless.
