Is Avalanche Software developing a Hogwarts Legacy 2? Or is this another case of the wand being dead in the dirt for good?
On February 10, 2023, this open-world take on the Harry Potter franchise hand glided into storefronts, appeasing wizards everywhere. Of course, there were some controversies, but the game still sold really well and was later ported to the Nintendo Switch. So, a sequel is inevitable, right? Well, let’s get into it.
Now, it’s worth acknowledging the main rumour that has led everyone to think a Howarts Legacy sequel is officially in development comes from a leaker on Twitter, who has leaked various Marvel Cinematic Universe projects in the past.
So, everyone should feel at least a bit sceptical because this person clearly isn’t an official staff member. However, Avalanche Software has previously confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will not receive any DLC. Plus, in the age of fan-made games and ROM hacks, it would be very easy to mod a classic title into your own Harry Potter-centric circus. But most of us don’t feel like playing a sudo version of one of our favourite games, so will there be a Hogwarts Legacy 2?
Will Avalanche Software make a Hogwarts Legacy 2?
As of the beginning of 2024, there are no official plans for Avalanche Software to develop a second instalment. That said, last year’s game sold the best out of every other title released in 2023, so you can almost guarantee the company will want to make more of it. According to a job listing on the Warner Bros Discovery website, we already know the developer is working on a yet-to-be-announced AAA project.
With all of that and MyTimeToShineHello’s Twitter leak put in the mix, it seems like a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is at least in the works. However, considering the amount of time it takes for major video game releases to come out these days, it will probably be a ways off.
Does Avalanche Sofware’s next project mean there won’t be a sequel?
Does the job listing on a Warner Bros website mean there won’t be a sequel? While nothing is certain in this world, it still seems very unlikely. The first game was the best-selling title of 2023 in the US, knocking Call of Duty and Rockstar Games off the top of the charts for the first time since 2008. There is an unannounced project in the works by the developer, and many are almost certain that it’s a sequel, and a prominent leaker has corroborated this information. So, no, the mere fact that a developer is working on something new does not automatically mean they’ll abandon their previous game.
The worst-case scenario is that Avalanche Software is spending its time on something completely new, and then, once that’s finished, they are returning to Hogwarts Legacy. Warner Bros. will probably want to keep the ball rolling, too.
How long until this game is revealed?
So, after discussing everything, it seems safe to assume that we won’t have to wait too long for an announcement. Delays are still possible, of course, but with a franchise this big, it’s doubtful that everybody involved would want to make their fans wait too much longer. When there’s smoke, there’s fire, you know? And if something does happen, well, at least we’ll have lots of rumours to keep us busy…
