What are the Best Retro Video Games for Sports Fans?

Some video games have become timeless classics despite being released decades ago. Many titles can be remembered in a positive light, as they were arguably ahead of their time and among the very best.

Sports-themed games have usually been among the leaders, as they can very rarely ever go out of fashion. Sports have always been a hugely popular hobby for many, and the availability of sport betting activities has only helped to enhance them further with some as they can obtain even more enjoyment from one of their favorite past times. Indeed, it also seems that developers had a little more fun in the past when releasing their games, as they would be able to bring things to the gamer that aren’t all too commonly seen today.

When thinking about retro games, we’re going to an era that predates 2010. Now, that may not sound that long ago. Still, with gaming having developed as much as it has over the last decade or so, it quickly becomes very interesting to see just what games were available and what older generations were enjoying all that time ago…

NBA Jam

Arguably one of the best sports-themed games to have ever existed was released in 1993. NBA Jam was available as an arcade game first, before it was released on various different game consoles, including the SNES and Game Boy. It would see players compete in a 2-v-2 format, where there were no fouls, free throws, or violations, providing a hugely fun take on basketball and giving players something very different to the traditional sport. It was a title that developers Midway managed to create a winning formula with, as they introduced the same concept within other American sports.

Temco Bowl

Also starting out as an Arcade game, Temco Bowl became a huge hit with gamers when it was made available as a home gaming title. It could be played on different consoles and brought American football to the masses. It was arguably the first football-themed game that allowed players to truly feel immersed in the experience with an accurate representation of what a football game should be like. Unsurprisingly, it is still regarded by some as being the birth of American football video games, with many citing it as the best to have ever been created.

SSX Tricky

Released in 2000, SSX Tricky brought snowboarding into the mainstream with its incredible gameplay. The game provided players with the opportunity to perform several stunts and tricks as they raced others around a course, earning XP and allowing players to modify their characters and the boards they had. It was a game that was well ahead of its time, and one that would still do very well today. The Run DMC soundtrack “It’s Tricky” also fitted the title of the game perfectly and helped make the game more enjoyable when heard!

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2

Another game that was based on a sport that wasn’t necessarily all that popular with people in the main, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, was arguably another of the games to have been released in 2000 that was way ahead of its time. The game allowed players to try and find the letters S-K-A-T-E as part of side missions, as you could skate around a map and perform a variety of different tricks.
