Character Name | Character Rarity | Element | Path | Listing Reason |
Aventurine | 5-Star | Imaginary | The Preservation | Aventurine is the top choice for players needing a jack-of-all-trades style character. He provides defense abilities for his allies, fantastic damage output, and much more. |
Fu Xuan | 5-Star | Quantum | The Preservation | Players looking for the best choice for a tank can look no further than Fu Xuan. She will take all the aggressive damage against her team and give it to herself. Furthermore, her passive only makes her a better tank because when she goes below 50% health, she beings to heal. |
Huohuo | 5-Star | Wind | The Abundance | Huohuo has two amazing qualities for players to use. She has an Ultimate that replenishes her team’s Energy. Additionally, she is a vital healer that also increases allies’ attack stats. |
Kafka | 5-Star | Lightning | The Nihility | Kafka is very necessary for all players. She creates follow-up attacks when basic moves land on enemies, granting more attacks and damage. Moreover, in prolonged combat, Kafka excels in damage over time, with the damage of the effect being used on every enemy. Furthermore, she is flexible to use with almost every character in the game, something that can be useful to adapt to any situation. |
Acheron | 5-Star | Lightning | The Nihility | Acheron shines through her Ultimate ability, which causes substantial damage. Furthermore, she earns it through debuffs on enemies. So players should aim to put her in teams with other Nihility characters to keep throwing debuffs and earning her Ultimate quickly and repeat the cycle. |
Bronya | 5-Star | Wind | The Harmony | Bronya is great at allowing players to keep their turns as she advances turns by 100%. Therefore, players can use a move as someone else on their team. If planned with the right character, could lead to a devastating attack, especially if an ultimate is ready like on a character like Acheron. Additionally, if you are looking for a character to remove an ally’s debuff, she has this ability as well. |
Feixiao | 5-Star | Wind | The Hunt | Feixiao pairs amazingly well with Kafka as they both have the same ability. Each time an ally hits an enemy, she can do a follow-up. Having both do it allows for multiple attacks per turn. However, it is best to bring a character along with her that deals damage to multiple enemies. That way she can focus on one enemy at a time. |
Ruan Mei | 5-Star | Ice | The Harmony | Ruan Mei can place a field that boosts the team’s All-Type Resistance Penetration, something useful for later fights especially. Additionally, she passively boosts speed, damage, and Break Effect for her allies. Ruan Mei is a critical character for buffing the team while pushing powerful slowing debuffs to foes. |
Robin | 5-Star | Physical | The Harmony | Robin is another great choice for players who need a character that does a little bit of everything. She focuses on helping the team by boosting damage, attack, Crit, and much more. The umbrella at which she buffs the team is something that works well for any character or comp in the game. |
Pela | 4-Star | Ice | The Nihility | Pela has a powerful Ultimate that allows her to not only debuff with lowering defense but give Ice damage as well. Although she is a 4-Star and does AOE attacks, her ultimate gives her that boost to be a top-tier character to be picked. |
Luocha | 5-Star | Imaginary | The Abundance | Luocha is one of the greatest Support characters to pick. He helps to heal teammates when they attack, something that can help especially if a lot of damage is done by an ally. When it comes to late-game battles, this skill alone can be life-saving. Furthermore, Luocha’s Ult blankets all foes in the fight with Imaginary damage, which can be crucial especially to a large group that is weak to the element. |
S-Tier Characters
Character Name | Character Rarity | Element | Path | Listing Reason |
Welt | 5-Star | Imaginary | The Nihility | Welt is a character that focuses less on attack and more on debuff, enemy speed reduction to be specific. Having him allows your team to fight more and the enemy less. However, because of this, he isn’t fully ideal if you are looking to do direct damage with him. But the reduction can be really useful for your allies. |
March 7th (The Hunt) | 4-Star | Imaginary | The Hunt | This variant of March 7th is a good damage option but in an assistant role. She assigns a buff to her allies, which if they are a part of a certain path, will get a boost (either increased damage to Toughness Reduction or additional damage). The character is versatile in buffing characters. So it comes down to which effect players wish for. |
Lynx | 4-Star | Quantum | The Abundance | Lynx is not the top choice when it comes to healing but she works well. She synergizes well with characters that take enemy aggression, and she can heal the whole team and more specifically, a character like that. Therefore, leaving the rest of the party members to go on the offensive and dismantle foes. |
Hanya | 4-Star | Physical | The Harmony | Skill Points can be vital in the game and Hanya works to generate them throughout a fight. She is an overall support, buffing her teammates with both offense and defense stats. But she is best used with characters like Misha and Imbibitor Lunae, who rely on Skill Points to dole out maximum damage. |
Gallagher | 4-Star | Fire | The Abundance | Gallagher is good for players who need an aggressive healer. He can take off debuffs on allies, debuff enemies attack damage by just hitting them and his fire attacks can but some hurt on the enemy. |
Dr. Ratio | 5-Star | Imaginary | The Hunt | Dr. Ratio is another character who relies on debuffs to cause mayhem for foes, something that is really useful when you have Nihility allies. Also, he can offer several follow-up attacks to an enemy that is targeted by other team members. |
Tingyun | 4-Star | Lightning | The Harmony | Although she is a 4-Star, Tingyun is a fantastic DPS character who should be a 5-Star. Her Ultimate both provides Energy to an ally but boosts attack damage, making that character a wrecking ball in a fight. |
Silver Wolf | 5-Star | Quantum | The Nihility | Players who want a great character for boss fights should take Silver Wolf. She implements a weakness to an element on her target, which if paired with a high DPS character of that element, can cause devastation to that boss or foe. |
Asta | 4-Star | Fire | The Harmony | Asta is incredible for boosting the entire party’s speed, enabling you to attack again much sooner. In many parts of the game, this mechanic can help keep you in the clear, as you will have more opportunities to fight and beat the enemy sooner. Additionally, having her Fire damage is useful, especially when you come across foes who succumb to it easily. |
A-Tier Characters
The A-Tier characters in Honkai Star Rail perform more in battles than those in the lower tiers. Some of them work well with other team members. Players should look to try and add at least one of the following characters below to their team when they can.
Character Name | Character Rarity | Element | Path | Listing Reason |
March 7th | 4-Star | Ice | The Preservation | March 7th is a great all-arounder when it comes to defense for your team. She can protect her allies with shields and even retaliate with an auto hit-back attack. Overall, she is a great choice for players looking to be cautious when playing through battles. |
Serval | 4-Star | Lightning | The Erudition | Serval is a good choice for players needing some lightning damage on their squad. Additionally, she has a great area-of-effect with her elemental attack and is a great choice for new players. |
Natasha | 4-Star | Physical | The Abundance | Natasha is incredible when it comes to healing, especially in the early game. By using her healing on a character, she can not only fully restore health. But, she can remove a debuff. As many foes tend to cast them, having something to take the effect off of an ally can help turn the tide of a fight. |
Yunli | 5-Star | Physical | The Destruction | Yunli is a character that’s good for players who need someone to take aggression. Her skill set has players use Taunts on foes and draw attacks to her, which in turn, give her Energy and help her gain her Ultimate. Therefore, having Yunli might be useful, especially if you have support to keep heals on her. |
Seele | 5-Star | Quantum | The Hunt | Players looking to try and keep the enemy from attacking on their turn and can provide high damage should recruit Seele. The character specializes in continuing her turn if she kills an enemy. Pairing this with a character who helps to boost damage or attack stats can help to keep your team attacking for longer. |
Jing Yuan | 5-Star | Lightning | The Erudition | Blade is an amazing DPS character. He sacrifices his health to up his damage. While this may seem bad, he also can heal himself in battle. As long as players can keep him alive, he can take out foes very quickly. However, it may be a good idea to have a healer as a backup. |
Jade | 5-Star | Quantum | The Erudition | Jade is a must-have for many team comps. Especially in those with AOE-dealing characters. If an ally does an attack and Jade has cast her Skill on them, the attack will also do Quantum damage. Therefore, players can deal multiple elemental damage to a foe. An attack that may prove strong in many fights in the game. |
Himeko | 5-Star | Fire | The Erudition | Himeko is a great attacker, fighting against both many enemies and singular foes. Furthermore, her Ultimate is a massive AOE of fire damage that works incredibly well against a large group. Players should be sure to bring her against enemies weak to Fire. |
Boothill | 5-Star | Physical | The Hunt | Players looking to deal great damage in one-on-one battles should look to Boothill. Especially among some of the 5-Star heroes. Additionally, he can work well to reduce the enemy’s Toughness, if you need someone to do so, look for Boothill. |
Black Swan | 5-Star | Wind | The Nihility | Black Swan is a character that shines in a group. She aims to boost the damage over time for other allies, something that is much needed in long fights. |
Blade | 5-Star | Wind | The Destruction | Blade is an amazing DPS character. He sacrifices his health to up his damage. While this may seem bad, he also can heal himself in battle. As long as players can keep him alive, he can take out foes very quickly. However, it may be a good idea to have a healer as backup. |
Argenti | 5-Star | Physical | The Erudition | Argenti is a powerful all-arounder that is easily accessible to play. A very strong Ultimate and a passive that boosts damage when against many enemies make him an optimal choice for many parts of the game. |
Topaz | 5-Star | Fire | The Hunt | Topaz functions as both a solo fighter and a good damage support character. Aside from being great against enemies weak to Fire, Topaz specializes in follow-up attacks. Therefore, an ally’s FUA will do extra damage and Topaz’s companion will also do one, providing even more hits to the opposition. |
Jingliu | 5-Star | Ice | The Destruction | Jingliu is needed on teams for DPS. Players can do great damage with her and get a massive boost when she is in Spectral Transmigration. The only disadvantage is that the window for that attack is smaller, so players need to make use of it to maximize Jingliu’s lethality. |
Imbibitor Lunae | 5-Star | Imaginary | The Destruction | Lunae has one of the higher Skill Point usages in the game. However, he also puts out fantastic damage that works well in almost any scenario. He does however take some practice with different comps to help balance out his PS usage. |
Firefly | 5-Star | Fire | The Destruction | Firefly is one unique character in the fact that she can cause an enemy to have Fire weakness. Furthermore, she has superb Break Damage that allows her to tear through groups of enemies. However, because of this, players need to focus on bringing characters that can help bolster Firefly’s BD. Something that may take away from using other, preferred comps. |
Sparkle | 5-Star | Wind | The Harmony | Sparkle is a great choice for players who have a team lacking in Skill Points. She pairs well with a character like Imbibitor Lunae, who requires a lot. As a bonus, Sparkle also helps boost the overall damage of her allies. In general, she is a safe choice if you are unsure who to bring with you. |
Jiaoqiu | 5-Star | Fire | The Nihility | Jiaoqiu is a character focused on debuffing enemies through a move called Ashen Roast. Additionally, he boosts the damage that targets take from Ultimates. Therefore, pairing him with a character like Acheron is a great choice. |

Character Name | Character Rarity | Element | Path | Listing Reason |
Luka | 4-Star | Physical | The Nihility | Bailu is an optimal healer in many scenarios. Especially because she can heal more than one ally at a time. However, the negative to her is that while she heals, she doesn’t take off any debuffs from her team. Therefore focusing on just keeping her teammates alive rather than full assist. |
Yukong | 4-Star | Imaginary | The Harmony | Yukong is a great addition to almost any 4-Star team as she increases her allies’ attack stats with her Skill. It is best to pair her with characters who work well with increased Crit Rate and Damage. |
Gepard | 5-Star | Ice | The Preservation | Gepard is a good choice to have as he provides Shields to the team. Something that can be a real lifesaver in longer battles. Furthermore, he works well at fighting against two enemies with his Ice abilities. |
Clara | 5-Star | Physical | The Destruction | Clara is an interesting pick for the sole reason that she is meant to be hit. Players need to keep her alive with a healer but the payoff is worth it. Because every time she is attacked, her companion Svarog deals strong damage back. |
Bailu | 5-Star | Lightning | The Abundance | Bailu is an optimal healer in many scenarios. Especially because she can heal more than one ally at a time. However, the negative to her is that while she heals, she doesn’t take off any debuffs from her team. Therefore focusing on just keep her teammates alive rather than full assist. |
Qingque | 4-Star | Quantum | The Erudition | Qinque, while powerful relies on luck to provide the best performance in a battle. She does great Damage as long as she matches tiles. A great feature, but she shines well in being able to attack multiple foes at once with her Basic Attack and Ultimate. |
C-Tier Characters
The characters in the C-Tier feel like the average usefulness of the game’s roster. Providing more than those in D-Tier, but still specializing in specific battles.
Character Name | Character Rarity | Element | Path | Listing Reason |
Sushang | 4-Star | Physical | The Hunt | Sushang does great damage to single targets. Furthermore, if you can get her to use her Skill, she gets another turn. So focusing on getting more frequent Skill uses can add more attack turns in battle. |
Sampo | 4-Star | Wind | The Nihility | While many of the characters in D-Tier and C-Tier serve one purpose, Sampo can fight well with both Wind Area of Effect and Damage Over Time. It is recommended if players use him, to get his attacks going at the start of a fight, helping to slow enemies. |
Guinaifen | 4-Star | Fire | The Nihility | Guinaifen is a solid 4-Star choice for Fire. She has Firekiss which works to debuff enemies. |
Xueyi | 4-Star | Quantum | The Destruction | Xueyi is a one-trick pony in what her primary purpose is, her Ultimate being powerful. She can lower any enemy’s Toughness regardless of weakness. However, this is her strongest feature. |
Moze | 4-Star | Lightning | The Hunt | Moze feels like an average Support character. Focused on DPS in a battle. |
D-Tier Characters
The D-Tier list characters for Honkai Star Rail are mediocre choices for players to use. They all have certain abilities that can be useful in finite situations or the early stages of the game. However, with some characters having similar Skills, the D-Tier characters don’t have the full potential as others do.
Character Name | Character Rarity | Element | Path | Listing Reason |
Arlan | 4-Star | Lightning | The Destruction | Arlan can be rough to use due to his skill taking away health. In contrast, the skill doesn’t use Skill Points, it’s a toss-up for players to have him on the team. |
Yanqing | 5-Star | Ice | The Hunt | Yanqing being focused on fighting enemies one at a time isn’t ideal. While he is good against Ice foes, other heroes share his traits that work better. |
Dan Heng | 4-Star | Wind | The Hunt | Dan Heng focuses well on Wind enemies. However, this is most of his potential. Decreasing attack speed works well for him, but he can cause fights to go south quickly because he is a singular fighter. |
Hook | 4-Star | Fire | The Destruction | Misha relying on a team comp that uses Skill Points to help bolster his damage is not great. The team setup for high Skill Point usage is very niche. Furthermore, players can find better types of characters that add the same uses. |
Trailblazer | 5-Star | Physical | The Destruction | The Physical version of Trailblazer is a solid choice for newer players. However, with the AOE damage being the main trait, players have much better characters to use. |
Trailblazer | 5-Star | Fire | The Preservation | A better version than the Physical character. But, this variant is primarily only strong against Fire enemies. If you are looking for a decent tank for your setup though, the Fire Trailblazer is an okay start. |
Misha | 4-Star | Ice | The Destruction | Misha relying on a team comp that uses Skill Points to help bolster his damage is not great. The team set up for high Skill Point usage is very niche. Furthermore, players can find better types of characters that add the same uses. |
Herta | 4-Star | Ice | The Erudition | Herta can do a follow-up attack after enemies reach a certain amount of health. Although she has a great Ice AOE, the latter is her best move and unfortunately feels like all she has to work with. |
