Warframe: 1999 Early Impressions

Warframe has dropped another massive expansion onto its player base and it is yet again free to all players. Warframe: 1999 is the name of this expansion and while it may have seemed like a whole new game to many, it is still an expansion of Warframe’s base game. With plenty of new content to experience, this expansion has further pushed Warframe as one of the largest fully free-to-play games. The game features no content locked behind a paywall with almost everything available in the game being able to be purchased with in-game currency or through trading with other players.

Warframe 1999: Sending Us Back In Time

Warframe 1999 shockingly takes place back in December 1999, way before the story of Warframe plays out. Your Drifter is sent back in time in order to try to change the past and save the lives of the original Protoframes. However, this won’t be easy as you first have to earn the trust of this ragtag group of mercs in order to save them from their own fate.

While the story implications can make this expansion feel like a bit of a side story from the main overarching story of Warframe, the amount of content that comes with this expansion makes up for it. We have get access to a new Warframe, Cyte-09, several new weapons, new mods, and a new vehicle, the Atomicycle.

We also get a new tileset to explore with the new Hollovania tileset. A nice outdoors and wintery tileset that houses a sickly tech-rotted underground subway and mall area.  Speaking of the Techrot, they are also one of the two new factions that you will be going up against with the Scaldra being the other new faction. While both of these factions are similar to the Infested and Grineer that we already have, they do feature new units and different ways to try to take you down.

Alongside the new tileset, we also get a new mission type, Faceoff, where two squads are pitted against each other to complete the same objectives before the other can. This adds a bit of competitive spice to Warframe’s mission pool. While this doesn’t feature direct PvP with other players, you can hinder the other side’s progress by completing your mission objectives faster.

The Hollovania Mall is finally open to all as the new Hub for players to interact with the Protoframes and features a new Orbiter location for players to use once they manage to complete the story of Warframe 1999. The Protoframes also make up the new syndicate, the Hex, and you will find them scattered around the mall as reputation vendors to receive your new gear.

Alongside all of these major additions, we also received a rework to two of the older frames in the game, Nyx and Trinity, as well as a new minigame for players to mess around with in their orbiter. All of this new content is free to all players, with the only requirement being that you must be caught up in the story to access Warframe 1999.
