2025 Release Confirmed for CS 1.6 Remake – No, Not That One

Earlier today, the lead for CS: Legacy, a standalone remake of Counter-Strike 1.6, will be coming to Steam Early Access later this year. The team also released a snazzy trailer featuring some very enticing shots of the game in action. The team behind the remake is largely comprised of the same people that worked on CS Promod, a similar project aimed at recreating CS 1.6 in the Source Engine that was discontinued after the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

This is a completely different project from Counter-Strike: Classic Offensive (also known as CS:CO), which was rejected by Steam in January after more than eight years of development.

The CS: Legacy trailer starts slow with shots that showcase the remake’s heavily customized Source engine in action. It’s all technically very impressive and grave and serious, and you could have fooled me by telling me this was using the Counter-Strike 2 engine. That is until I saw how the game moves. Honestly, I’d forgotten just how prevalent bunnyhopping used to be in Counter-Strike. It has, after all, been more than a decade since Global Offensive released and made the technique near-useless.

Having only tinkered in 1.6 a few times in my youth, the rampant squatting and hopping has no nostalgic effect on me. That said, good for the faithful few who waited all these years for a high-quality modern take on their favorite game. Hopefully, it’s worth the wait.
