Ronald D. Moore Attached to the God of War TV Series, 2 Seasons Ordered

Ronald D. Moore, the celebrated screenwriter best known for Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, is hard at work on a TV adaptation of God of War. Moore revealed this during an appearance on Katee Sackhoff’s podcast, The Sackhoff Show. I’ve embedded the episode below. Watch it. The two share a meaty discussion about all things sci-fi, including all the incredible works Moore’s had a hand in, but you can jump to timestamp 1:17:15 to go straight to the God of War stuff.

According to Moore, Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the show. He also shares that he tried his hand at the games but found the controls far too complex, much moreso than the arcade-era titles he’s used to—an adorable thought that channels “dad’s trying his best”.

The news aligns with recent rumors that work on the God of War TV series had been hard reset. Sony officially announced the series was in the works in 2022, but hasn’t revealed much else about its progress since. With Amazon committed to a two-season production, it’s safe to say the company is confident in the adaptation.

We’ve seen a recent trend in high-budget video game adaptations, bucking the low-quality, no-budget games-to-film curse of the ’90s and ’00s. The Last of Us and Fallout series both released to massive commercial and critical success; Amazon bringing in someone of Moore’s caliber is a promising indicator that God of War may soon join their ranks.

No details have been revealed yet about the TV series’ plot, setting, or characters. Will it cover Kratos’ rage-fueled road trip through Greece (God of Wars 1–3)? Or will Moore be exploring the more somber and cinematic Dad of War era (God of War 2018 and Ragnarok)? I have my fingers crossed it will be the former—after two games of a more tempered version of Kratos, it would be fun to see him let loose and lay waste with reckless abandon again.

More details about the God of War adaptation are scarce, and despite Moore’s sterling reputation, the question remains whether or not he can capture what makes God of War special. No release window has been announced, but expectations will be high.
