A new announcement trailer has dropped for Skate Story, the surreal and atmospheric boarding adventure game by solo developer Sam Eng—the first new information about the game since it was first revealed at the 2020 PC Gaming Show. The minute-and-a-half video offers a few new looks at Skate Story in action. It’s subtle, but you can see how the extra time has resulted in added visual detail and polish compared to what we’ve seen of the game previously.
The big news from the trailer is that it’s coming to PlayStation 5. Previously, it was only confirmed for PC. Additionally, Sam Eng himself shared some more juicy details about the game in a post on the official PlayStation blog, including the game’s story and the activities players can do in the downtime when they aren’t tripping down glassy highways and shattered urban landscapes.
According to Eng, Skate Story is about “a demon made of glass who needs to skate the Underworld and consume The Moon to fulfill the devil’s contract.” Players will “skate through nine layers of hell and battle larger-than-life bosses.” There will also be “a whole cast of characters”, which is a bit of a pleasant surprise to me. Everything we’ve seen so far makes the game look like an introspective, solitary experience, so I’m eager to see how these other characters will fit into it all.
Eng also confirmed that players will be able to customize their boards by trading Souls “for decks, wheels, and trucks to keep your skating fresh.” We can also expect “70+ skate tricks” and skate trials, which provides opportunities for players to level up. It turns out there’s quite a bit more “game” to the Skate Story than the trailers convey.
Skate Story will be coming out in 2025. Eng promises we can expect more news about the game “later this summer.”
