With the Nintendo Switch 2 releasing sooner than ever before, many fans have taken to research and diving into what the future of the console might award us. Reddit user Icy-ConcentrationC posted their own findings, which include a trademark Nintendo recently filed for an old franchise that I thought would never see the light of day again: Nintendogs. The filing itself happened on March 20, 2025, and specified that it was for a Goods & Services-type product.
It’s been almost 14 years since we last saw a Nintendogs title, Nintendogs + Cats , for the 3DS. The charm of the game was being able to speak into your 3DS to talk to your pet and teach it tricks. The concept probably wasn’t favorable for the Wii U, which left the Switch to be the latest console the games could be made for. However, the Switch doesn’t have a built in microphone, which would have severely limited the gameplay of a Nintendogs game. But now, the Switch 2 has officially been revealed to have a microphone. Could Nintendogs be coming back? The United States Patent and Trademark Office might have revealed so.

Something else that’s important to take note of with this trademark filing is that they need to be refiled every ten years, and the Nintendogs franchise is just finishing the ninth year since it was last filed. So, it is also very likely that this is a routine renewal as opposed to a glimpse of the future. Despite the trademark being filed before the airing of the last Nintendo Direct featuring the Switch 2, Nintendogs didn’t make an appearance. Personally, I am with the entire internet when we say that the franchise should return. However, I also don’t want to see it return unless it’s pumped with the same kind of love that was inject ed into the first round of games for the Nintendo DS.
