Bungie Reignites Marathon Interest With Strange Post

Bungie Reignites Marathon Interest With Strange Post

Fans of Bungie games have been introduced to their love of the developer through various means. For many, their introduction to Bungie was via the 1994 first-person shooter, Marathon. The franchise consists of a complete trilogy that had it’s latest release in 1996. Since 2005, the game’s assets have been released as freeware.

In 2023, Bungie surprised fans by releasing a teaser trailer for a brand-new version of Marathon, a PVP extraction shooter set in the year 2850. Since then, there hasn’t been much new information for fans to enjoy. However, the official Marathon Twitter page recently teased fans with a mysterious and cryptic post. Fans also noted that the header for the game’s official Steam and Twitter pages has been updated for the first time since its announcement.

Fans quickly took to the comments to give their answer to what is either a puzzle, question, or simply a graphic to remind people that development is going well. Some commenters noted that since we haven’t heard anything in a while, what makes this time any different?

It’s possible that a more formal announcement will be released in the coming days. From my research, the Marathon account only responded to one commenter who asked for more information: “Mercy is outdated.” What I find amusing about the entire situation is how many people are tagging @grok, X’s AI search engine, to try and solve the post.

Bungie was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2022, and various plans have been in motion to make use of that acquisition. Within two years, the developer was among the industry’s largest layoffs at more than 2,000 across almost three rounds. As a result, players have been skeptical of what’s to come from Bungie, despite Marathon looking as great as it does. It’s likely we’ll be hearing more information about the game very soon.
