CD Projekt Has Sold GOG to Its Co-founder

CD Projekt has announced that co-founder Michał Kiciński has completed the full acquisition of digital storefront Good Old Games for around $25 million. Kiciński purchased 100% of the shares in GOG, making him the sole owner of the company.

“For a long time now, GOG has been operating independently. Now it’s going into very good hands — we are convinced that with the support of Michał Kiciński, one of GOG’s co-founders, its future will be full of great projects and successes,” said Michał Nowakowski, Joint CEO of CD Projekt.

The agreement is being viewed as a necessary separation of interests that allows CD Projekt to invest more of its resources toward games development. While Good Old Games is widely considered a very important part of the video games ecosystem, the digital distribution platform famously operates on razor-thin margins. The response from the community has been largely positive, with many relieved GOG operations will be handed over to a co-founder rather than an external third party that may seek to redirect the platform away from its DRM-free, digital ownership mission.

CD Projekt is best known as the parent company of CD Projekt RED, the studio behind seminal singleplayer videogame RPGs Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series. Despite now having zero ownership over the GOG platform, CD Projekt and Good Old Games will continue to work together to distribute titles developed by the Polish games developer.
