Steins;Gate Re:Boot is Releasing First on Xbox and PC in the West

In case you haven’t already heard, Steins;Gate, the beloved sci-fi visual novel from 5pb. (now known as Mages) and Nitroplus, is getting a brand-new remake titled Steins;Gate Re:Boot. This is the second remake of the hit game, following the launch of Steins;Gate Elite in 2018. But while Elite debuted exclusively on PS4 and Switch in Japan, Steins;Gate Re:Boot will come to two unexpected platforms first in the West.

Earlier this month, Mages, the developer of the Steins;Gate remake, confirmed that the game will be released on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on August 20, 2026. This release date, however, was only for the Japanese launch of the game. With Steins:Gate Re:Boot fully supporting English localization at launch, many assumed that its release date would be the same in both Japan and the West, but that isn’t completely the case.

Steins;Gate Re:Boot’s Western and Japanese Launches Will Not Be the Same

Mages recently revealed on the official Steins;Gate website that the upcoming remake will indeed launch on August 20 in the West, but only on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam. The PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 versions of the game will instead come out on October 29, 2026 worldwide. The PS4 version, meanwhile, will seemingly not release outside of Japan.

Mages and Western publisher Spike Chunsoft have yet to comment on why the PlayStation and Nintendo ports of Steins;Gate Re:Boot are releasing so late in the West. The delay, however, may have something to do with the fact that these particular versions of the game are getting physical releases.

While the Xbox Series X/S and PC ports are going to be digital-only, Steins;Gate Re:Boot will be available both physically and digitally on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. It’s possible that Spike Chunsoft needs more time to publish the physical versions of the game worldwide, which is why it has decided to postpone the release of the game on those consoles. Perhaps it would have made more sense to launch all digital versions of the game on the same day, but it seems that isn’t going to happen.

Steins;Gate is Finally Returning to Xbox After Several Years

The Steins;Gate series (and most Mages-developed games in general) have often skipped Xbox platforms in recent years. Because of this, the release of Steins;Gate Re:Boot on Xbox Series X/S comes as somewhat of a surprise. Still, Mages’ and Spike Chunsoft’s unexpected decision to launch the remake first on Xbox and PC does harken back to the roots of the series.

As diehard Mages fans may already know, Steins;Gate was originally released as an Xbox 360 exclusive in Japan, way back in 2009. It then came to PC and was later ported to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. The Steins;Gate spin-off, Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace, followed a similar release strategy. Oddly enough, none of the Xbox versions of the Steins;Gate games have ever made their way to the West. Steins;Gate Re:Boot will thus be the first in the series to launch on Xbox worldwide.
