Games like Red Dead Redemption 2 on the PS5

PS5 Games like Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 is an open-world game set in the Wild West, where players take control of outlaw Arthur. The narrative sees Arthur conflicted about his changing mindset and loyalty to the gang. The game provides several activities, including hunting, fishing, robbing, and more. This makes Red Dead Redemption 2 an immersive game, where players can do both basic things while completing the bigger picture. Here are the five best PS5 games like Red Dead Redemption 2, details about their gameplay, and what makes them similar to RDR2.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Witcher III Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an open-world RPG where players control Geralt, who is searching for his daughter. Gameplay features Geralt completing monster contracts, investigating supernatural instances, and finding leads from NPCs. The game doesn’t just have you killing enemies blindly, instead focusing on investigating what to do next and who to fight. Geralt can also enter horse races, look for Witcher gear, or just explore the world.

Luckily, the game doesn’t force you to stay on the main story, allowing you to explore or interact with NPCs. This is in line with RDR2, and both games offer ample freedom to players, rather than prioritizing a linear path of progression, which in turn allows you to immerse into the game more easily. However, there are certain differences, as Witcher focuses on typical RPG progressions such as gear and skill upgrades. RDR2 is more about following Arthur in everyday tasks, and unexpectedly finding action.

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut: Will It Come to PC and Xbox?

Ghost of Tsushima follows Jin Sakai after the Mongol invasion. Jin Sakai starts using stealth and other combat tactics as you progress in the game. However, this conflicts with his code and adds a layer of guilt to the character’s development. There is substantial variety in the weapon types, with players having the option to use swords, bows, or throwable items.

The game is similar to RDR2, especially in how both treat their world. There is never an empty adventure in either game, as RDR2’s riding trip can turn into a mission and Ghost of Tsushima’s fox chase can lead you to a shrine. The playable characters also have hobbies, with Arthur fishing and Jin writing haikus. Combat is the most different between the games, but there are enough similarities that players who like Red Dead Redemption 2 will like this game as well.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the futuristic Night City, where you are a mercenary, V. The core premise revolves around the fact that you have a prototype biochip implant that is taking over your mind. Gameplay mixes FPS with stealth, hacking, driving, and ample character development. You can develop V in different ways, with their various builds allowing different upgrades and skills. There are also several side missions, with a series about malfunctioning AI taxis.

The game may not be visually similar to RDR2 because of the futuristic look of Cyberpunk, but there are several elements which are common in both titles. Both games have significant optional content that allows players to step away from the main story and focus on side quests. The main difference between the games may be in character build, as Cyberpunk allows you to build V around hacking, stealth, or cyberware. RDR2 is more restrictive and controls Arthur’s abilities and gear.

GTA V

best grand theft auto games trio from gta 5

GTA 5 may seem like the odd one out in this list, as the Rockstar title is a different type of open-world game. However, despite its gameplay having a story of criminal activities, the game provides ample opportunity for players to complete side missions and also provides activities such as golf, tennis, and others. These are both strong elements that make the game similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.

RDR2 has several random encounters, which occur while riding across the world. GTA 5 has similar random events that you find while moving around the map. The biggest similarity between the two titles is that the developer is the same and gives players freedom rather than locking them into the main story.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

Kingdom Come Deliverance II's Henry riding a horse

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is set in the 15th century, with you controlling a destitute Henry, who has no gear or money. Initially, you have to do basic things such as finding a place to sleep, earning money, and getting gear. You acquire a sword and gear as you progress in the game. A unique element of the game that many RPGs don’t include is that food can go bad, clothes get dirty and bloody, and NPCs react to Henry’s appearance.

This game may be the most similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 and not just because of the open world or narrative. Both games include normal actions that increase immersion. These include Arthur eating and sleeping in RDR2 and Henry having to maintain his diet, clothes, and hygiene. RDR2 and Kingdom Come both also give players a reason to travel the world rather than using fast travel by providing side activities.
