Total War Warhammer 3: Thanquol Guide (Lords of the End Times)

Total War Warhammer 3 Thanquol

Thanquol of Clan Scruten is one of the four premium lords in Total War Warhammer 3: Lords of the End Times, whose campaign revolves around Masterplans that raise secret armies, steal resources, and invoke destructive rites. This guide will provide you with tips and tricks on how to complete the Thanquol campaign in the game.

Thanquol Masterplans Explained

Thanquol Masterplans

Thanquol starts at Karag Dromar in the Black Water region near the Empire and Dwarf holds. You begin at war with Zhufbar and nearby targets like Grom Peak. You can also recruit Underlings, who level up from completed Masterplans and have unique skill trees that improve various plan types. Here are the three main Masterplans:

MasterplansFeatures
Military (Kill-Stab)Target a settlement and decide when to trigger the surprise attack.

Position your own forces to support your Underlings in coordinated strikes.

Economic (Steal-Take)Infiltrate settlements to steal gold, food, and especially Warpstone.

Excellent plan for resource crises without committing to open war or occupation.

Magical (Great-Smart)Invoke rites to summon Verminlord or call down a meteor to devastate a province.

You can also expand the Under Empire or create other catastrophic effects.

But besides completing Masterplans, you also need to do tasks from the Council of Thirteen, and ultimately build the Morskittar Engine that requires significant Warpstone to destroy Morrslieb. Here’s what you need to expect:

  • Each underling has a pool of Schemes that appear randomly each turn.
  • Beneficial schemes improve each plan, but over time Complications appear.
  • You can tinker with these schemes, sacrifice some for better ones, or trade Warpstone with other Skaven clans for additional schemes.
  • Don’t launch critical plans on your last resources and expect to repair or adapt rather than abandon plans at the first complication.
  • Note that Underlings become unavailable for a turn after completing a plan.

Best Army Composition & Battle Playstyle

Army Composition

Since Thanquol is a dual-lore caster with Plague and Ruin, who unlocks the Dreaded Thirteenth, you can consume Warpstone Tokens for powerful casting. Use this to create an ultimate army of the following units:

TypesUnits
StormfiendsShock Gauntlets, Grinderfists, Doom-flayer Gauntlets, Ratling Cannons, Windlaunchers, and Warpfire Projectors.
VerminlordsCorruptor, Warpseer, Warbringer, and Deceiver.
Skreech VerminkingDoom Glaive and Plaguereaper.
High DamageWarp-Doom Magma Cannon, Cauldron of a Thousand Poxes, and Pusbags.
SkavenClanrats, Stormvermin, Rat Ogres, Doomwheels, and Plagueclaws.

As already mentioned, the Black Water start puts you near Dwarf strongholds, so here’s where your priorities should be:

  1. Secure and upgrade Karag Dromar and clear immediate threats.
  2. Expand your income and unlock Masterplans as soon as possible.
  3. Choose your first additional underling, such as Warlock Master that excels at Warpstone generation.
  4. Use economic heists for Warpstone shortages and military plans to strike your targets.
  5. Use Diplomacy with other Skaven clans for Warpstone trades and scheme support.
  6. Later, continuously run multiple Masterplans and use them to steal from the wealthy Empire.
  7. Summon Verminlords and stockpile Warpstone for the endgame upgrades.
  8. Expand the Under Empire and unlock Skreech Verminking via quest battle.
  9. Recruit Verminlords as army generals with new elite units.
