Xbox May Be Planning to Improve Physical Game Distribution

Xbox isn’t exactly known for being consistent when it comes to its physical releases. Many of the games that the company launches are released exclusively on digital storefronts. As for the handful of titles that do get distributed physically, almost all of them are not complete on-disc. This means that players don’t truly own most of the physical Xbox-published games that they buy. These titles require downloads in order to be installed, and if Microsoft ever decides to shut down the servers that they’re hosted on, their discs will become no more than useless coasters.

When PlayStation announced earlier this year that it would stop manufacturing new physical games starting in January 2028, many gamers understandably expected that Xbox would eventually follow suit. Though the company hasn’t announced anything officially yet, it wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if it did so. Xbox’s haphazard attitude towards physical game releases hasn’t instilled much confidence in fans that it will be the stewards of the physical media market going forward.

Microsoft is Looking to Hire an Xbox Games Supply Strategist

A recent job listing posted by Microsoft, however, suggests that Xbox’s plans may actually be different from what most people expect. On October 14, Microsoft announced that it was looking to hire an Xbox Games Supply Strategist for its Supply Chain team.

This strategist, according to Microsoft, will “coordinate the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms, lead development & oversee execution of global supply positioning strategies across all stages of the product lifecycle, ensure that inventory is positioned to deliver working capital/cost/service goals, and oversee the sales & channel execution of those games.” They will also work closely with various groups within Supply Chain “to establish & manage supply and sales plan of record.”

The part of this job listing that’s attracted the most attention, of course, is the section where it mentions “the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms.” Now, technically speaking, this statement may not be referring to physical Xbox games for Xbox consoles. Given that this statement includes the phrase “all platforms,” it’s possible that this Xbox Games Supply Strategist will primarily manage physical game releases for PlayStation (pre-2028) and Nintendo consoles.

Unlike PlayStation, Xbox May Continue to Release Physical Games

It is worth noting, though, that Xbox seems be moving more and more towards exclusivity again, despite spending a few years experimenting with multiplatform releases. Gears of War: E-Day just launched as an Xbox console exclusive, and leaked surveys suggest that Microsoft is considering making virtually all of its future games exclusive to Xbox, as well.

If Microsoft does double down on exclusivity, then there’s a very good chance that the job listing mentioned above is referring specifically to physical games for Xbox consoles. In that case, then maybe Xbox is actually planning to support physical media for the time being, unlike PlayStation. After all, why else would Microsoft be hiring someone to improve Xbox’s presence in the physical games market?
