Square Enix Says No FF7 Rebirth Physical Edition on Xbox

Square Enix says Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth will not have a physical release when it comes out on Xbox Series consoles in 2026.

Speaking in a recent interview with RPG Site, Creative Studio 1 head Naoki Hamaguchi spoke about Square Enix’s decision to bring the second installment in its critically lauded remake series to Microsoft consoles. According to Hamaguchi, the decision was made in accordance to the company’s multi-platform philosophy:

In terms of releasing on Xbox, this was decided at the same time our company’s direction or overall philosophy of approaching multi-platform releases was decided.

When asked about a potential physical Xbox release, Hamaguchi says that will depend on whether there’s enough demand for it, though Square Enix currently has no plans for one.

In terms of the physical Xbox version release, we currently don’t have plans for it, but it also does depend on the player demand. If there’s a lot of demand for it within the users, that is something that would be great to consider.

Despite critical success, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth reportedly failed to meet sales expectations when it released in 2024, though it had a bit of a turnaround early this year when it released on Steam. In an interview with Automaton, Hamaguchi claimed that the game is now ‘doing very well’ on both PC and PS5, however, there is speculation that the declining sales of Microsoft consoles, which have fallen again for the fourth year in a row, may be a deciding factor behind the lack of a physical edition on Xbox.
