Square Enix Has ‘No Plans’ for New Character DLC in Final Fantasy Resonance

In an era where modern releases are frequently paired with post-launch roadmaps, seasonal expansions, and paid character drops, Square Enix is taking a traditional approach for its upcoming HD-2D title, Final Fantasy Resonance.

Speaking in an interview with RPG Site, Producer Keisuke Nakashima confirmed that the development team currently has no plans to release additional “Visions” (the game’s summonable classic franchise characters) as post-launch downloadable content.

When asked whether the team would consider expanding the game’s initial roster of 26 Visions through post-launch updates or paid DLC, Nakashima made it clear that the studio prioritized delivering a complete package on day one.

“As of now, there are currently no plans for additional Visions,” Nakashima told RPG Site. “We wanted to make sure our focus and all our resources were allocated towards ensuring a satisfying and fun main game experience.”

Nakashima conceded that commercial success and strong fan reception “does open up possibilities”, though he reiterated that the development team’s attention remains on the core base game.

The decision marks a notable departure from current industry trends, particularly for a title based on the mobile RPG Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The original mobile title relied heavily on a live-service gacha model, constantly rolling out new units and crossovers over its multi-year lifespan. For Final Fantasy Resonance, however, Square Enix appears committed to pitching the game as a self-contained, full-price console RPG rather than a live-service platform.

A free playable demo is currently available across platforms, allowing fans to experience the game’s entire first chapter. Early reception from the demo has been overwhelmingly positive, with players and critics alike praising Resonance as a refreshing “return to form” that captures the depth and charm of classic turn-based Final Fantasy titles.

Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC, with a playable demo currently available.
