The Walking Dead Onslaught Is A Very Promising VR Game

Last week, The Walking Dead Onslaught was revealed. This is the second game in the franchise that will be coming to PlayStation VR, and honestly it looks pretty damn great. It appears to focus much less on the campaign, and really double down on the gameplay aspect, which seemed to be one of the things that suffered in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. However, while that last game was sort of dropped on players without much warning, this second one seems to be getting much more of a build up.

So what do you do in this game? Well, firstly there’s the campaign. This seems to be a story set in the cinematic universe of The Walking Dead, right after the Saviour War in Alexandria. The safe zone needs to be rebuilt and repaired for future generations. Daryl is the narrator, from what I can work out, and it’s his story about a mysterious stranger, which is presumably the player, that will form the campaign. However, this is just one small part of the game.

The real draw, at least for me, to this game is the Scavenger Mode. This puts you into the shoes of Daryl, Carol, Rick, and Michonne, as they head out on infinite missions to gather supplies. Along the way you’ll encounter hordes of the undead, and need to fight your way through them in order to get through the mission alive, and eventually back to base with those supplies. The supplies will upgrade your community, and unlock further quests to take on.

This game looks to be much faster than Saints & Sinners, and a much more competent experience as a result. There are a number of weapons from The Walking Dead universe to use, and the undead are a lot trickier to get to grips with. This makes planning key to each encounter, otherwise you’ll end up very much dead. The game launches on September 29, which is just over one month away. I really can’t wait to give this one a go. I think it’s going to be one of the best PlayStation VR games of the year.
