Destiny 2 has had season passes for more than a year now. I’ve been playing with the full collector’s edition of each expansion, which comes with every season pass automatically. However, it isn’t until Season of the Chosen that I’ve actually cared about completing all the levels in one. I know that part of this is that I haven’t consciously made the $10 investment every season to take advantage of the season pass, but I’ve always had the feeling that I’m missing out. I’ve just never enjoyed the seasons enough to care about the season pass until now though.
Pinpointing what it is about Season of the Chosen that makes me care is easy. there’s enough content frontloaded to you that you get about halfway through the season pass before you realize how much progress you’ve made. I checked last night and I was at level 40. I’ve never made it past 20 before. I got there by completing the seasonal storyline, a small piece of content that is incredibly rewarding. I also chased the ornaments for the season’s pinnacle weapon. Usually, these are insane, but the requirements this season were achievable in just a couple of days.
Now, I’m at the point of no return. I’m looking at my quests to see what I can do to keep myself playing every day. One thing that helps massively ar the seasonal challenges. These are exactly the same as weekly challenges in Fortnite. You unlock a set every week, and they reward you with huge amounts of XP for completing small tasks. They’re really worth doing if you’re pushing to get all 100 levels in the season pass, and now it’s all I can do.
Bungie has transformed Destiny 2 for me with the simple addition of this content. It’s not a dramatic change to the base experience in Destiny 2, but it’s enough that I now consider the game to be fun again. I previously got to the point where everything felt too hard, and I thought I was missing all the good stuff because I didn’t have any time. Now I feel like I’m getting the most out of the game, and I don’t care about what I’m missing.
