I’m More Interested In Dying Light 2’s Choices Than Ever

Last week, Dying Light 2’s developers did a big Q and A session. They had more than 9000 questions and worked out which ones were the most common so that they could provide the best answers to the community possible. Among these was a question about a new infected type. It has branches sticking out of its back, and apparently, it’s pretty damn nasty. The thing is, this isn’t an enemy you’ll face in every playthrough. Your choices make it appear, or keep it away, so depending on what you do in the game, you might have a harder or easier time in store.

Previously, the developers have talked about how choices matter. They shape the world. So, for example, if you release water from an area so that there’s more space for people to live, you’ll do everyone a favor. The only issue is that you’ll also wake up a bunch of spiked zombies who are hell-bent on hugging and impaling you. Likewise, if you leave the water, you’ll cause a faction to rise up and make trouble for the rest of the survivors later on in the story.

What’s becoming increasingly clear is that there are no easy choices in this game. You’ll almost certainly cause an issue regardless of the choice you make. The only decision you have to make is who to annoy, kill, or make a problem for later on. In many cases, I expect that making issues for the good guys will make the game easier later on. That’s a shame then because I’m always helping the good guys. I love how the game evolves based on your choices though.

More and more I’m becoming invested in the choices system in Dying Light 2. It’s not a unique mechanic. Games have worlds that chance in certain ways depending on the choices you make already and have done for years. But the way in which they vary the base gameplay in Dying Light 2 is so interesting. It opens up hundreds of avenues for unique playthroughs. This is going to make it a lot of fun to replay over and over again, just to make sure that you finally see everything, even though I’m not entirely sure that’s possible.
