While The Last of Us is getting all the attention right now, with TV shows, sequels and even spin-offs coming through the pipeline, many fans have started to wonder if this is all we’ll be getting from developer Naughty Dog for the foreseeable future. And no, we’re not referring to Jak and Daxter, even though that would be nice. We’re going to discuss the Uncharted series today and, more specifically, when we will see Uncharted 5.
What is the recent news about Uncharted 5?
Now that the HBO series and Uncharted movie have receded into the past, there haven’t been any updates on whether or not a new Uncharted game is coming anytime soon. However, fans haven’t given up hope. In fact, one such beacon was surprisingly found in a “Live From PS5” ad that aired in late January of last year. In this commercial, fans saw a brief clip featuring a young woman in what looks to be a tomb, blowing off dust on an old relic, à la Nathan Drake. This led many fans to speculate whether this was Cassie, the daughter of Nate and Elena from 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. Other than this brief teaser, if you could even call it that, there still hasn’t been much in the way of news from the team at Naughty Dog.
At least, that is if you don’t count a general statement from Creative Director Neil Druckman about this topic, who, in a Buzzfeed interview, said, “For us, Uncharted was insanely successful — Uncharted 4 was one of our best-selling games — and we’re able to put our final brushstroke on that story and say that we’re done. We’re moving on.” So, yeah, it seems like the franchise could be done forever now. Unless…
Could a different studio make the game?
This seems like the best way for the series to come back and for its developers to work on something completely different if they don’t want anything to do with it anymore. Sony’s Bend Studio has been proven to be pretty capable in the past after the success of Days Gone, and there was a job listing from PlayStation that read: “co-developing an exciting new project with Naughty Dog in a beloved franchise.” This has since been closed, but it could potentially mean that Naughty Dog and Bend Studio are working on a new entry, and it just hasn’t been officially announced yet. Whatever the case, we’ll have to cross our fingers and keep waiting, bringing us back to this article’s whole point.
When will we see Uncharted 5?
Considering the popularity of The Last of Us, the fragments of hints and potential teases from commercials and job listings, as well as statements from the director himself, it doesn’t seem like we’ll be seeing an Uncharted 5 for a while. But who knows, maybe whenever the next State of Play rolls around, our dreams will finally come true, and we’ll get a new game developed by Bend Studio. Or, we could be stuck in a never-ending loop of content from everyone’s favourite survival horror franchise that is also the internet’s favourite punching bag on some nights. Either way, at least we’ll still have five great home console games to keep us busy.
