Puzzles are a staple of the Resident Evil franchise, especially when it comes to the remakes of some of the more beloved games in the franchise. Resident Evil 2 Remake has a puzzle that is better known as the Chess Piece puzzle that requires you to place chess pieces into slots. You’re already provided with three of the chess pieces, but there are an additional three that you need to move on. Let’s dive into where to find each of the chess pieces and how to solve the Chess Piece puzzle in Resident Evil 2 Remake.
Where To Find The Chess Pieces in Resident Evil 2 Remake
Before we can even begin getting to any of the chess pieces, you need to grab the turnkey tool just outside of the room where the puzzle takes place. You’ll need to lower the bridge just outside of the room where, on the other side, the tool will be on top of a table as pictured above. Once that’s been acquired, you can focus on the chess pieces.
King Chess Piece
Both the Queen and the King chess pieces are located in the same place because you need the Queen to unlock the King. You’ll need to go through the door pictured above, which is in the opposite direction of where you found the turnkey. Down this staircase, you will need to defeat the three zombies there and make a left through a hallway that has a locked door at the end. Using the turnkey, open the door and go through to a metal walkway.
The end of the walkway leads to a well-lit worktable and ladder that descends into a murky basement area (This worktable has a key item just above it that you will need to have to open another door in a future mission). Walking through to the end of this area will lead to a door with a bright red light above it. Following the staircase that leads to the bottom of this new room, you’ll see a box that requires the King chess piece. To the left of that box, you’ll come across a box that has the Queen chess piece lodged inside. Remove the Queen and place it in the box just across from it to open the hallway that leads to a box with the King Chess piece inside. Using the King chess piece, you can unlock the room that required the King chess piece at the beginning of this area to obtain the Flamethrower.
Queen Chess Piece
After taking the King chess piece, walk around to the room where the box that now has the Queen chess piece is. Remove the Queen chess piece from this box and place it back into the box where you had originally found it. With the new door open, walk through and place the King chess piece in the box with the King piece’s symbol. With both of those doors open, remove the Queen chess piece from the box and walk around to the door that the King chess piece opened. Now, you’ll be able to take both chess pieces and leave the area.
Rook Chess Piece
With both the Queen and King chess pieces in hand, backtrack past the worktable and into the area that had the three zombies you killed earlier. On the opposite side of this room, you’ll find a locked door with a lever to the right of it. Walk through to the end of the murky walkway, past the brute on the left side, until you come across a locked door that requires the turnkey.
After entering, walk through until you find an elevator that you need to ascend to the next floor. The room you’ll head into after this will have a roll of film and a hip pouch for you to collect. In the next room, the Rook chess piece will be in a box to the left. At this point, backtrack to the chess puzzle room.
Solving the Chess Puzzle in Resident Evil 2 Remake
Now that you have all of the chess pieces, it’s time to use them. Follow the instructions in the images above to place the chess pieces in the correct area. On the left side of the room, the Bishop piece goes in the far left box, the Rook piece goes in the center, and the Knight piece goes in the left. On the right side of the room, the Queen piece goes in the center and the King piece goes in the box to the left of that. Once completed, the Chess Piece puzzle in Resident Evil 2 Remake will be solved.
