Is Fallout 4 Multiplayer?

Fallout 4

So you’re looking to explore the expansive wastelands of Boston — a deprived and barren wasteland that’s utterly apocalyptic — with a pal? Not just a companion like Dogmeat or X6-88, but a real-life friend, correct? Sure, stuff like Fallout 76 exists, but what about past games? Can you play Fallout 4 with a friend?

Does Fallout 4 Support Multiplayer?

Fallout 4

Sadly, playing Fallout 4 online with a friend officially is not possible since the option was never made available to players. This is mainly due to the sheer amount of work it would take to implement that feature into a massive single-player-oriented open-world game.

The developers and their publisher, Bethesda Softworks, decided instead to make a brand new game to cater to those who wanted to explore with their pals. This title was, of course, Fallout 76, released on October 23, 2018, for the last-gen consoles.

However, if you still want to play Fallout 4 with your buddies, there is an option…

How to Play Fallout 4 Multiplayer with Mods

Fallout 4

With the Building Bridges mod, players can interact with each other with a paper trail of notes reminiscent of titles such as Elden Ring. It’s still not quite the same as having players running alongside you in real-time, but it at least gives players a way to share information and learn from each other. Unfortunately, though, Fallout 4 mods are unavailable on consoles and currently restricted to PC players only. We’re also not going to link to any on this site, but they’re out there if you know where to look.

Other Fallout Multiplayer Options

If you really want to play Fallout with other people but dissatisfied with the lack of mods for Fallout 4, you do have other options. You can play either Fallout 76, which is fantastic these days and even better when you play with a small group or Fallout: The Roleplaying Game — a TTRPG with surprising depth.

Of course, the latter requires you to purchase the tabletop game, have friends to go along with it, and complete all the little details to complete a full playthrough. But what’s possibly even worse is that you need to wrangle up actual real-life people, all of whom must be interested in playing this game. And it could even last several hours! Thankfully, you can throw all that socializing out the window and pick up a copy of Fallout 76 for yourself.

How to Play Fallout 76 Online With Friends

Fallout 4

So, to play this game online with your pals, you need to open the map, go to social, open the friend tab, and type in their Bethesda username to add them. Your friend must be online to accept the invitation, or it will automatically decline. Once they accept it, you or your friend will have to click on each other’s user name in the Bethesda friends tab and click “join” to get into each other’s server. Finally, click on your friend’s name again and click “invite to team” to play co-op. Presto! It’s still not the same as Fallout 4 multiplayer, but at least it’s something.

Hopefully, this gave you a better idea of the current state of multiplayer in recent Fallout titles, specifically Fallout 4. While we still have no word on when the next game will be released, a popular show set in the same universe of the series is currently watchable on streaming services. It’s apparently very good, making you wonder if a new entry is coming sooner rather than later. In the meantime, though, we at least have Fallout London to keep us busy…
