Top 10 Weirdest Cars in Gran Turismo

weird cars with googly eyes emote and Gran Turismo art

Many cars are in racing games, but the weirdest ones are in Gran Turismo. The series, developed by Polyphony Digital for PlayStation has been going for years. Featuring hundreds of cars from real brands, players partake in track racing. However, even with the expansive roster, there are bound to be oddities that you can drive. These range from real-world ones to made-up designs in-game.

We have curated a list of the Top 10 weirdest cars within Gran Turismo. While they may look odd, some are a force to be reckoned with. Whether you are a series veteran or a newcomer, these vehicles can be found throughout. Furthermore, if you are a car collector in the game, do not miss out on these in your journey. Below are the details on the odd vehicles in the series.

10. Jeep Willys MB ’45

  • Country of Origin: United States
  • Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 7
  • Top Speed: 73 mph (117.5 km/h)
  • Year: 1945

The Jeep Willys MB ’45 is an iconic piece of history, used during World War 2. However, its placement in Gran Turismo feels very out of place. While the series has had SUVs and offroad vehicles, the Willys sticks out. While not the weirdest looking in the game, it just feels it was misplaced in a game centered mainly around track and race cars.

9. Toyota Hiace Van DX ’16

  • Country of Origin: Japan
  • Drivetrain: Rear-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 7
  • Top Speed: 88 mph (141.6 km/h)
  • Year: 2016

The Toyota Hiace Van while a civilian vehicle is in a similar situation to the Willys. It seems out of place in the racing series. Any vehicle can go around the track. However, the Hiace feels impractical and lacking while it races around the track. Furthermore, its slower speed makes it feel like something is there for show and pictures rather than usefulness.

8. BMW i3 ’15

  • Country of Origin: Germany
  • Drivetrain: Rear-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo Sport
  • Top Speed: 93 mph (149.7 km/h)
  • Year: 2015

The BMW i3 is a not great-looking BMW, rather it feels like a stain on the sports designs of the brand. Due to it being a city car, it doesn’t have a great need or performance of reaching high speeds. Furthermore, its minivan look mixed with the elegance of BMW feels misplaced in a track racing scenario. Additionally, it has a weaker battery (it is an electric vehicle) and because of this, it doesn’t perform for great lengths of endurance races. The addition of this car in the games feels almost like a self-aware joke and something to collect and store in the game. When it comes to civilian-style cars, the BMW i3 is one of the weirdest cars in Gran Turismo without question.

7. Italdesign EXENEO Vision Gran Turismo

  • Country of Origin: Italy
  • Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 7
  • Top Speed: 225 mph (361.1 km/h)
  • Year: 2023

The Italdesign EXENEO Vision Gran Turismo is a concept car. There are two variants, a Street model and an Off-Road version. However, both are strange-looking cars. Something straight out of the future. While it looks sleek, the windshield itself looks covered, with no clear view of the interior from the outside. Additionally, its suspension is used through an intelligence system. Therefore, it automatically adapts to the different types of terrain it encounters.

6. Peugeot L500R HYbrid Vision Gran Turismo

  • Country of Origin: France
  • Drivetrain: N/A
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo Sport
  • Top Speed: 202 mph (325.1 km/h)
  • Year: 2017

The Peugeot L500R is designed specifically for the Gran Turismo Vision series of cars for the games. But the cosmetic look of the car looks straight out of Hot Wheels. While the standard paint scheme is interesting, the overall design seems strange compared to the standard looks of various supercars in the game. Furthermore, because it is a concept car, it tends to have a more exaggerated look to it than other vehicles as well.

5. Volkswagen GTI Roadster Gran Turismo Vision

  • Country of Origin: Germany
  • Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 6
  • Top Speed: 176 mph (283.2 km/h)
  • Year: N/A

The Volkswagen GTI Roadster is another GT Vision series car in the games. What makes it one of the weirdest cars in the game though isn’t just the odd shaping and massive spoiler. Rather, it’s that of being a roadster. While race cars in the past were convertibles, this concept seems to stick out while on the racetrack. Furthermore, its windshield is much lower than a standard one which seems conceptually flawed, especially when going at high speeds on a track.

4. Radical SR3 SL ’13

  • Country of Origin: Great Britain
  • Drivetrain: N/A
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 7
  • Top Speed: N/A
  • Year: N/A

The Radical SR3 SL is another roadster that is one of the weirder sides of Gran Turismo. It features a go-kart cabin for the driver. Additionally, its body doesn’t seem to suit the rest of the vehicle as it has a sleeker design. Technically, the vehicle is street-legal, meaning civilians could drive it on the road. But, there are impracticalities and its low windshield is one of them.

3. Škoda Vision Gran Turismo

  • Country of Origin: Czech Republic
  • Drivetrain: All-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 7
  • Top Speed: 194 mph (312.2 km/h)
  • Year: 2024

The Škoda Vision Gran Turismo is another weird-looking car placed in Gran Turismo. The series is all about celebrating cars and their history, which is fine. However, with many concept cars, including this one, the design is very off-putting. It gives off the feeling that you are driving a spaceship around the track rather than a normal race car. While it is a very fast machine, it doesn’t feel like it belongs within the game’s roster among other cars that could be in and have been left out so far. Gran Turismo is based on simulating racing as real as possible. But, the HUD that appears while driving this car seems to take some of that immersion away.

2. Chaparral 2J ’70

  • Country of Origin: United States
  • Drivetrain: Rear-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 4
  • Top Speed: 223 mph (358.9 km/h)
  • Year: 1970

The Chaparral 2J race car developed by the same name company is surely weird in Gran Turismo. While it was developed many years ago, its boxy look is an unpleasant sight. Especially since many race cars were more elegant during the era and even before. Furthermore, at first glance, much of its design indicates no proper airflow due to its rigid, square look. However, as a piece of history, players should be sure to add it to their collection.

1. Gran Turismo Racing Kart 125 Shifter

  • Country of Origin: N/A
  • Drivetrain: Rear-Wheel Drive
  • First Appearance: Gran Turismo 6
  • Top Speed: 110 mph (177 km/h)
  • Year: N/A

Made exclusively for Gran Turismo, the Racing Kart is certainly one of the weirdest cars in the series. While the games focus on racing, it is mainly cars that we see or other larger vehicles. So to see a small racing kart on any of the tracks is different. Furthermore, it isn’t a slow vehicle, with its blazing top speed, it is one of the stranger cars to have in your collection.

That is our Top 10 Weirdest Cars list for Gran Turismo. The series by Polyphony Digital is incredible and continues to strive since its inauguration back in 1997 on PlayStation. Each title brings more and more cars to the roster for players to purchase and race. However, this doesn’t stop some off-putting vehicles from making their way into the games. While each vehicle is unique and players should strive to drive them all, we can’t help but wonder why choices like the ones above made it into the games.
