Atari Acquires Implicit Conversions, Now Owns 3 Studios Known for Remasters

Atari announced that it has acquired Implicit Conversions as reported by GamesBeat, adding to the company’s stable of studios known for bringing classic video games into the modern era. Implicit Conversions has refreshed more than 100 retro titles since 2019, including introducing Soul Calibur 3 and Tekken III to PSN. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Atari’s standing as a heritage brand for retro gaming.

Implicit Conversions joins Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse, both studios also known for remaking and remastering retro titles for a new audience. “Alongside the Bakesale Engine (Digital Eclipse) and the Kex Engine (Nightdive), we now have an enviable suite of proprietary tools, and more engineering talent that will enable us to continue to expand our capabilities across our own catalog as well as the back catalogs of our IP partners,” said Atari CEO Wade Rosen.

A significant number of retro titles available on the Playstation Network through the PlayStation Plus program were developed by Implicit Conversions using their proprietary emulation tools, leading some to question whether the acquisition will affect Sony’s retro gaming strategy going forward.
