Disney and Square Enix ‘Expand’ Kingdom Hearts Universe with Big Announcements

Disney and Square Enix took the stage at D23 to deliver a slate of major updates for Kingdom Hearts, celebrating the franchise’s legacy while mapping out its future.

The presentation highlighted the ongoing partnership between the companies and franchise director Tetsuya Nomura, emphasizing a shared commitment to expanding Sora’s journey across new mediums as the series moves into its next chapter.

Alongside the broader franchise news, Disney confirmed a release window for Kingdom Hearts 4, which is currently slated to launch in late 2027.

The reveal was paired with a new showcase trailer debuting a world inspired by Pixar’s Coco, marking the latest iconic property to join the crossover saga.

The biggest surprise of the event came in a dedicated final reveal announcing an original Kingdom Hearts anime series in development for Disney Channel and Disney+.

Created in close collaboration with Nomura and Square Enix, the show will feature a brand-new story designed to expand the franchise universe.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, noted that working directly with Nomura guarantees the project will remain “unmistakably Kingdom Hearts.”

This announcement brings long-running industry speculation to a close, as rumors of an animated adaptation have hovered around the fanbase ever since Disney+ first launched back in 2019.

Despite reports that an adaptation spent years quietly trapped in development hell, Friday’s unveil serves as the first official confirmation that the project is alive and actively moving forward.

However, the news has also sparked apprehension within the community over whether the TV show will become “required reading” to follow Kingdom Hearts 4.

The franchise is infamous for placing critical canonical lore inside side entries, handheld spin-offs, and mobile releases rather than keeping it exclusive to mainline games.
