What Is the New Sift Dimension Coming to Minecraft?

Mojang officially announced that the Sift dimension, introduced in Minecraft Dungeons II, will also be coming to core Minecraft. This is the first new dimension added to Minecraft in a decade and a half, when The End was introduced in November 2011.

Currently, there are no specific details about what the Sift dimension will look like in Minecraft. However, we do know what it’ll look like in Minecraft Dungeons II, and that should give us a pretty good idea of what to expect when the new area finally makes the leap to core Minecraft.

What Does The Sift Dimension Look Like?

The Sift dimension introduces a look that contrasts starkly with the rest of Minecraft. Previously, we had the lush greens and earth tones of the Overworld, the crimson and basalt of the Nether, or the cold, barren void of the End. The Sift, by contrast, feels dreamlike and surreal, with pastel tones and glowing soil blocks.

In a recent devlog interview, members of the Minecraft Dungeons II team described a few key details about the new Sift dimension:

There is a new natural hazard called Aiker. This soul-rich liquid’ is unique to the valleys of the Sift. Unlike water (which cools and extinguishes) or lava (which burns blocks and players), Aiker slowly depletes the player’s health and XP bar. In Minecraft Dungeons II, Aiker also drains your ‘soul energy’, though core Minecraft doesn’t (currently) have that mechanic.

The entire Sift dimension is made up of ‘Alien Blocks’, which are a brand-new kit of blocks. Players will gain access to pastel wood sets, glowing foliage, and strange geological blocks that are native to the Sift.

What New Resources Are In the Sift Dimension?

A new dimension requires its own self-sustaining ecosystem. Rather than populating the Sift with simple reskins of Overworld mobs, the realm introduces creatures adapted specifically to survive its soul-draining atmosphere.

The most prominent mob revealed for the dimension is The Blub—a deceptively cute, gelatinous creature that thrives inside the Sift’s toxic landscape. Unbothered by the life-draining properties of Aiker, Blubs swim effortlessly through the glowing liquid pools.

There are also a number of new items and gear introduced with the Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II that we may be getting in core Minecraft, such as potions that make you more resistant to the effects of Aiker and unique Sift Gear Upgrades.

According to the developers, drops from Sift creatures like the Blub will allow players to craft new items and potions. Materials gathered from the dimension’s unique stone and flora can be used to craft special Sift gear.

Will The Silt Dimension Have a New Boss?

Just like the Ender Dragon in the End, the Sift dimension may also be getting its own high-stakes boss encounter.

In Minecraft Dungeons II, the Sift dimension concludes with a dangerous confrontation with The Monarch, a dangerous two-phase boss fight. In the first phase, The Monarch attacks the player with various heavy melee and AoE Soul attacks. If the player succeeds in bringing down its HP, it will enter its second phase. In the second phase, The Monarch summons an ‘echo’ of itself, forcing the player to battle both the real Monarch and its clone at the same time.

While Mojang has not yet explicitly confirmed whether The Monarch boss fight will be imported into mainline Minecraft alongside the dimension itself, incorporating it into the update would solve one of the survival mode’s oldest design bottlenecks.

Currently, core Minecraft features only one true progression-ending boss—the Ender Dragon (with the Wither serving as an optional, player-summoned challenge). Adding The Monarch as a naturally generated, realm-specific boss would give survival players a dedicated end-game objective that hasn’t existed since 2011.
