Fallout 4: The Capital Wasteland Is Getting Point Lookout

Fallout 4: The Capital Wasteland is a mod project for Fallout 4. The team is recreating all of Fallout 3 within the Fallout 4 engine, and so far it’s a project that looks like it could become the definitive version of Fallout 3 for the future. As the team work on more and more content for the mod, they’re slowly adding in everything that was in Fallout 3, and they’ve finally gotten around to starting on one of the best DLCs ever made, Point Lookout.

Point Lookout was a really weird and fantastic piece of DLC for Fallout 3. Part of what made it so good was the fact that it added a huge new chunk of map to explore. The swampland of Point Lookout State Park is filled with dead trees and nightmarish enemies to get beaten up by. It has the feel of a location that may have seen a leak from some sort of power plant, but really it’s just got a totally different ecology to the Capital Wasteland.

The DLC’s story is really interesting, and I won’t even try to spoil it by explaining it here. Needless to say, you must play this DLC in some form if you have the ability to. It took a lot of the surprise and intrigue from the base game, and packed it into a smaller space, whilst still making it feel like a game that could stand on its own.

The thing that really got me about Point Lookout were the enemies. The people here have been mutated by radiation, as they have everywhere, but you won’t find raiders, people who have retained some part of their mind, you’ll find full on inbred crazies. The ‘human’ enemies in Point Lookout are scary because they’re massive, overpowering, and savage people with nothing to lose. As the Wanderer, you’ve stumbled into their land, and now you’re fair game.

These people haven’t had to cope with strangers in their lives for so long that they don’t even see them as human, they’re just more prey to hunt, kill, and eat. I think that this was one of the crowning jewels of Fallout 3, making it one of the best games ever made to this day.
