Alan Wake Remastered Looks Fantastic

I’ve been playing a tonne of Alan Wake Remastered lately, and I have to tell you that it looks brilliant. The original always looked a little dreary to me, as if it was all smudged for some reason. While I know realise that part of that is the dark fog that’s actually a mechanic in the game, this visual upgrade in the remaster is astounding all the same. The game looks like it could have come out in 2021, even though beneath the amazing visuals it’s still the same clunky 2010 title. If you’re looking for a nightmarish visual treat though, this is it, and it’s even got decent pacing.

Alan Wake isn’t a game I was ever bothered about playing. I wanted to try the remaster because I know that the game has a cult following, and it’s linked with one of my favourite games, Control. I’m really happy with the end result, because the story is just as good as all of tis followers say, but it’s the visuals that have hooked me. For a game to make such great use of light and dark still astounds me. If you’re not aware, darkness is a key mechanic in the game, which is why it’s so impressive that this remaster looks so good.

The game spawns enemies in the darkness, and you need to use light to kill them, or at least weaken them. The upgraded visuals make this more of a treat than in games that were launched in 2021. The lighting is superb, whether it’s from the sun through some bushes, the flashlight, or the workmens’ lights that are scattered around the place. The way the enemies burn and explode in the light is also pretty cool, though that’s the worst-looking part of the game for me. Even that looks fabulous.

If you’re on the fence about this game, and you haven’t played Alan Wake before, jump right in. The game is an absolute treat for the eyes and ears, and while it’s not terribly scary, it’s got enough gameplay to keep you interested for the fairly short run time. I’ve had loads of fun with it, even though I’ve been meticulously collecting items around the world. This is a fantastic weekend adventure, have at it.
