From what we have seen so far, 2024 is packed with successful games across all genres and new upcoming games promise to paint a similar picture. Whether you are up from some teamwork co-op there or you prefer the story-driven single-player stories, 2024 is stacked.
In this list, we will give you just a taste of incredible single-player games coming out this year. From dystopian city builders to story-driven RPGs we have everything.
9. Black Myth: Wukong
To start the list of best upcoming single-player games for 2024 is Black Myth: Wukong. This action RPG by Game Science draws inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. You take control of the destined one, a monkey wielding the powerful Ruyi Jingu Bang staff. As the protagonist, you will have access to melee combat but also magic abilities, with the game offering a skill tree for character progression.
What makes it more compelling is the official theme song from the beloved 1996 Journey to the West TV series from the mid-80s, and it will be deeply intertwined with Chinese mythology. This promising action RPG gem will be released on August 20 for PS 5 and PC, while the Xbox release will come later in the year at an unspecified date.
8. Avowed
The eighth place on our list of best single-player games coming in 2024 is another action RPG, Avowed. The game comes from Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas. The game takes you to the world of Eora, familiar to Pillars of Eternity fans, in which you will play as an envoy for an empire.
Avowed is a mix of RPG, action-adventure, and shooter, as you can switch from first to third-person perspective and use different combat, including magic, melee, and firearms, which makes it rather unique. You will have help from various companions as you travel the vast world. Avowed still doesn’t have an official release date, but according to reports, it will be released in the fall of 2024.
7. Star Wars Outlaws
our list is Star Wars Outlaws, an open-world action-adventure set between Episodes V and VI. Developed by Massive Entertainment (creators of The Division) and published by Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws lets you take control of outlaw Kay Vess and her trusty companion Nix. You will get to visit such iconic locations from the franchise as Tatooine, and brand new planets as you embark on a daring heist across the Outer Rim. The game is played from a third-person perspective and promises a story that will alter your knowledge about Star Wars. It is scheduled for release on 30 August for PS5, PC, and Xbox X/S.
6. Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn
You might think that we are listing too many RPGs, but you will love this fun and interesting action RPG from A44 Games, creators of Ashen. In this title, you will fight for humanity’s survival as Nor Vanek, a warrior that has a flintlock and an axe, fighting against ancient gods. By your side, you will have Enki, a creature with magical abilities that will teleport you, and even grant you boss-killing powers! It is a classic RPG with a progression system and unlockable skills, and it locks and loads on PS5, PC, and Xbox X/S on 18 July.
5. Frostpunk 2
Frostpunk 2 mixes up things on the list of best single-player games in 2024. This is a city-building survival and a sequel to 11 Bit Studios’ original that takes place 30 years after the players were introduced to the harsh frozen world. Your task is to lead a new society in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by volcanic winter. The sequel expands on every idea from the first game including district-based cities, factions that fight between, and a council system. This time, survival isn’t just about the elements, but managing the delicate balance of a growing population with diverse needs. Frostpunk 2 is out on July 26 for PC, PS5, and Xbox X/S.
4. Silent Hill 2 Remake
The next title on our list is the hauntingly terrifying return to the foggy town, Silent Hill 2 Remake. The survival horror from Bloober Team takes you back to the shoes of James Sunderland as you uncover mysteries of the town from an over-the-shoulder perspective. The combat will resemble one from The Last of Us, which promises the game to be a great upgrade to the original, another good this is that Silent Hill 2 Remake boasts the return of the original game’s monster designer Masahiro Ito and composer Akira Yamaoka, ensuring both terrifying visuals and an unsettling score. Silent Hill 2 Remake lands on PC and PS5 on October 8.
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornnobyl
We are closing into the top spots of the list and before that, we have a first-person survival gem that has been in production for so long that we feared it would survive the perils of the Zone itself: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl! This long-awaited sequel from GSC Game World picks up after more than a decade, taking players back into the radioactive wasteland of Chornobyl.
Originally announced in 2010 and then canceled, the project was revived in 2018 and powered by Unreal Engine 5. The development team’s perseverance through financial difficulties and the ongoing war in Ukraine makes the September 5th, 2024 release date all the sweeter for fans.
In this survival horror, you will explore the non-linear world full of mutants, stalkers, and anomalies. It is a love letter to the original game with improved graphics, and gameplay, and offers a fresh take on the atmospheric survival horror it is known for.
2. Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has used its stealth already to jump into the second spot on the list of upcoming best single-player games for 2024. In this latest mainline entry in the series, Ubisoft Quebec is taking the players on a thrilling adventure through feudal Japan. Shadows brings a new twist to the franchise with two main protagonists, Naoe, a kunoichi great at stealth and swift takedowns, and Yasuke, a powerful African samurai who powers its way through with devastating melee combat. You will switch between these characters in different situations, telling the same story from two different perspectives.
Assassin’s Creed brings an open world and a known dedication to the historical setting, promising an epic adventure. The game launches on November 15 for PS5, Xbox X/S, PC, and iPad and MacOS.
1. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The top spot belongs to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It is a long-awaited sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition and is scheduled to land on PS5, Xbox X/S, and PC this fall. Originally code-named “Joplin” and then “Morrison,” the game was finally revealed as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2022, before settling on its current title, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, in June 2024. The game is a sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition and is set 10 years after the events of that game, taking players back to Thedas, with new regions and stories. Unlike previous games, The Veilguard has real-time action combat with a tactical pause option and will have seven different companions you can interchange and use only three at times. We, like all fans, are eager to see if BioWare will deliver the new title that lives up to the Dragon Age legacy.
As you can see, 2024 is stacked with incredible single-player games. This is just a portion of many games that are coming out this year, so which one is your favorite?
